Is this a thing?

Had potential buyer call up this morning wanting to view my A6. He pushed to view today…and then didn’t turn up.

I gave him a call and he said he was unhappy about last year’s MOT advisories - all of which were addressed at this year’s MOT - for £1,100 - leaving it with no advisories. And he decided that this 16-year-old car having seven previous owners was far too many, and as a result it was worth £2k less (it’s advertised for £7k).

Is this a case of cold feet or an uninformed haggling technique?

It’s just selling stuff and dealing with messers.

Guy just doesn't want to pay what you have said. Either negociate or move on.

Tell him the price has actually gone up £2k to £9k but you might consider going back to the original price if he stops being a cock. I normally refuse to talk price with anyone who hasn't seen the car.

The fact that he happened to name seemingly plausible things doesn’t mean he actually had ANY justification for those things.

He was always going to try and offer £2k less, either because he doesn’t have it, or doesn’t want to pay the asking price.

He just hung it on a couple of spurious things that wouldn’t bother any serious buyer.

I’ve had folk turn up and insist a couple of thousand below is “reasonable” or ask “what’s your best price” straight out , then aggressively lowballing

Just ignore him. Not turning up without letting you know is bad manners.

Don't chase him, it makes you look desperate.

bloke is a messer - he does not actually want to buy - his usual MO will be sending a message saying 'is it still available ? '

After two scammers and then this, I think you’re right.

Think he was genuinely interested, so imagine he’s having second thoughts about V8 road tax or fuel bills…

Would agree with you but he phoned me up after I responded to his message and asked all the right questions. Wouldn’t have expected him to have offered 30% under the price in person…

Ha. Very tempting.

Could always direct him to one with three times the mileage of mine which is up for £4,800 along with ‘Maybe this might suit your budget better’. biglaugh

Why on earth would you phone a no show-er back?

That grifter didn't bother to turn up, and now thinks you're desperate, so is offering fk all.

If they turned up after a conversation like that it would be with another 2k off or they'd leave. Or expect you to deliver and offer even less post messing.

Never, ever call someone like that back, they're not a serious buyer.

Ignore him, and wait for someone who actually does want to buy your car to come along.

Just sold a 25k car, so many time wasters offering 15k and pick it up today blah blah blah.
It’ll be obvious when someone genuine is interested. Just ignore the other muppets.
Good luck

Curiosity!

I did address the misinformed reasons he gave, so he’ll either disappear or return, knowing not to offer a stupid price. Either option is fine…

I agree with the others.

He doesn’t have the full funds, so is just looking for ANY options for lowering the price.

I imagine it was competitively priced, so he couldn’t use that opening gambit.

I have had people spend ages test driving and lifting the car up on jacks to look at absolutely everything before admitting they never intended to pay full price.

I think it’s well priced, but I can only find one other half tidy A6 with the same engine and that’s three years older and has three times the miles…

There was a similar-ish one last week but that was a write off and one or two tatty older cars in various states of disrepair/non-running engines.

He seemed pretty with it on the phone, but maybe that was a practiced spiel.

Can spot them a mile off as they add to their derisory offer “Cash” and “Today”.

I always wonder about their love lives if they get to the offer so quickly….

You feel like if it was free they would want some money off anyway, maybe a full tank of petrol and for you to deliver it.

I would see if it actually works in some cases, I knocked my 350Z down from 9 grand to 7 but I drove 150 miles to see it and it was full of dings, had a nick in the hood and a few other undisclosed things, made a bid and was prepared to walk away as it was t worth the nine unless it was perfect as described. But, I turned up, chancers want it knocked down by 25 percent with no commitment at all and would probably try and get more off if they ever did turn up.

If I get them doing it in person, i just say we aren’t going to come to an agreement and bid them good day and go back inside, not wasting time stood on a the path in a stalemate staring at our shoes.

Having found your advert, I think it's a hard car to value, personally - given fuel and tax costs - though this no-showing tool should've already known this. Sounds like a trader trying it on to me.

I'd maybe even stick it on eBay auction with a silly reserve so it doesn't actually sell, use the final figure as a guide to it's actual value, maybe even contact the highest bidder. An odd way to do it, I appreciate, but thats my best advice!

This is a good rule. Anyone who wants to negotiate at length without having seen the car or at least done some due diligence if it's a distance purchase is a time waster.
