Thinking of switching to a diesel car
Discussion
Hi,
we are thinking of switching to a 2019 diesel (euro 6) SUV to save us some money, currently getting 25 mpg being really careful we will get better mileage (45), we will be keeping for 3-4 years, possible more depending on how things go.
Is there any reason not to do this?
cheers
Rich

My work has moved and I may have to get a more efficient car.
There is a 15-20 mile commute each way which could be motorway or B road. The cost of parking is based on the emissions..
I don't want anything too big as we already have an SUV and I also don't want to break the bank.
What sort of thing would you suggest?
Fiesta? and the ilk?

This was to replace my 172, which i ended up keeping. We are replacing a petrol stelvio with a diesel version, we've run the numbers, included a number of hybrids too, but my question is about the fuel not changing. We had a diesel stelvio before and had no issues.rykard said:

You will probably gain 15mpg from 2.0 petrol Stelvio to Diesel.
I changed my commuter car from E class diesel to a Giulia QV. The Merc averaged 43mpg, the Giulia 27mpg. Difference is roughly £60 a month.
So the diesel will offer fuel savings, but you need to weigh this up with finance, depreciation and smile factor.

Are you leasing or PCP'ing? If so it doesn't matter. Personally I just sold a diesel car and specifically wanted a petrol to replace it. I think for certain types of cars nobody will want a diesel in 5 years time. For some cars though they are nearly all diesel anyway in the second hand market.

its a QV.. but can't use the full potential, its wasted trundling to work and back. I changed my commuter car from E class diesel to a Giulia QV. The Merc averaged 43mpg, the Giulia 27mpg. Difference is roughly £60 a month.

it will be PCP..
Depends on a number of factors. I did the sums on our two cars (one diesel, one petrol, similar size vehicles and engine size). Petrol is cheaper but the diesel gave better MPG. Worked out about the same cost wise. So I ran both for 400 miles to check and the difference was £1.80
Personally though, I'd avoid a modern diesel. Too much potential to go wrong.
