Hi my fiancée has taken out finance on a car for me to drive for her as she has bipolar disorder and other mental health issues stopping her from being able to drive but has hospital appointments and we thought it was a good idea as she can have the freedom.
She has been excepted and we told the car dealer that I will be driving the car because of said reason.
How do I go about insurance and tax ? I hold a full licence as why I am the driver.
Should I be the registered keeper on v5 ?
Help would be grateful
Thanks
Due to collect car in a week

Declare that you are not the registered keeper. Most insurance companies don’t care if you are married / living together.

Who is going to be responsible for tax, MOT etc? That to me is one of the pointers towards who the registered keeper should be. If you are happy to take this on then name yourself on the V5.

Insurance shouldn’t be an issue, you will be asked if it is your car, you tell them it is owned by your fiancée and tell them who registered keeper is (you or your fiancée). Insurers don’t mind this being husband/ wives etc.

She said I can buy it from her when the finance has been paid which is nice.

The dealers know I will be driving due to her not being able too and the finance went through ok but since they said that was fronting I’m a bit confused as to what to say now lol
It’s not a lie she can’t drive and she wanted to finance the car so I could drive it to help her mobility and we can go places easier.
So do we tell them to put the v5 in my name as I will be taxing and insuring it? But she is paying the car off

Is motability possible? I understand that if you get awarded the relevant part of pip you are entitled. You can add to the allowance. This being pistonheads I expect to be shot down but just trying to help.

You'd only be "fronting" if you told the insurer that your girlfriend was going to be the main driver. If you tell the insurer that she owns the car and you are going to be the main or indeed the only driver, then you are not "fronting".

Fronting is when you lie about who's going to be driving the car.

No unfortunately not her thought process was to go down this route I did mention it to her but she wanted to keep her income as it is.

As it’s financed then the finance company owns the car. They’re likely to insist that she is RK.

As others have said, shouldn’t make any difference to insurance, done with OP as policyholder.

It shouldn't really matter who is the registered keeper, if you're married and living at the same place it's almost meaningless to make a distinction. But you're right the correct answer is the registered keeper is whoever the owner wants it to be. I'd normally say with motability taking advantage of tax dispensations it's better to not raise any red flags, but with what the OP describes there's enough evidence that this is a legitimate approach that there's no issues there either.

The OP should be asking the finance company directly. As someone who has a consumer credit licence and arranges car finance the car will have to be registered to the same party who is named on the finance agreement.

We see this all the time, people trying to finance a vehicle for someone else to use. I have never come across a case where everything doesn’t have to go in the same name when finance is involved.

Just keep it simple - your fiancé is taking out the fInance so she can be the RK on the V5.
This will probably be insisted upon by the Fiancé company anyway.
Then you insure it in your name but just advise them that she is the RK.
Tax will come through to her and either of you can physically then renew it as its an online process.

  • Finance * company.
OP, dealer is also wrong in their fronting comment as has already been stated.

I've had finance in my name for cars my son bought in the past, the dealer may insist (some don't) it should be registered in the same name as the finance which we did, then just transfer the ownership. Insurance is fine as long as it's taken on in the name of the main driver

When I worked for a finance company we had numerous issues with people taking out finance in other people's name. It's called an accommodation deal and we classed it as fraud. The person taking out the finance must also insure the vehicle in their name. It is also vital that they have a full UK driving license as there may be circumstances where they will need a hire car due to vehicle quality issues etc and that would need to be in their name. All this will be stated in the terms and conditions of the agreement.

I.dont see an issue as long as you take out insurance in your name as the main driver.

I did it when I was using my wife's old car as a run about for a while. Told the insurer it was registered to my wife but I was the main driver and they were fine.

But it’s not illegal to get car finance and not be able to drive due to one reason or another.
So a nominated person has to be the driver ?
