Bought a 2016 discovery 4, I'll start this by sayign the dealer has been great.

68k mile car, had a full service before I bought it, full history.

24 hours after arrving home, water in fuel light came on, it had just had a new fuel filter, they replaced the housing this time and sensor. Also had a knock in the driveline somewhere, they replaced the prop shaft centre joint.

week later, water in fuel light on again, in addition car had a couple of strange gearbox issues where the red light above the 'D' flashed and it wouldnt change up. They replaced the gear selector as it was showing as a fault(£400ish part) and replaced the fuel sensor and wiring.

3 days after getting it back(took 4/5 days as the gear selector was on back order), the engine ecu light has now come on.

What should I do? I feel like I just want it gone now. would I be out of order to ask for my money back? Dealer has been really good, however its had none stop issues and i feel like its a lemon.

I can see why landcruiser v8 D costs £10k+ more.

The dealer is obviously doing their best, but I'd reject it either way. That's too many issues in such a short space of time in my opinion.

I feel for the dealer here but you don't want to be lumped with a lemon forevermore.

Explain your thoughts to the dealer who supplied the car & see how good they really are , I doubt they will take the car back for a full refund but its worth a go seeing all the hassle you are experiencing.

Plan B option , stick with it & hopefully they can it sorted again.

Plan C option see what else they have for sale & perhaps there is an other car you would interested in doing a change over.

I paid £1k depost on credit card, the rest cash, its been in the dealers 3 times, I can't see how they'd wriggle out of it? there's nothing they have that i'd want. it was 33 days ago that I paid for it.

What would you replace it with ? If it’s another Disco 4 then your better off staying put, at least your getting it fixed foc

It seems to me that you've given the dealer a chance to fix the car, and (it sounds like) the same apparent fault, the engine warning light, is still present after two attempted fixes.

As such I think you're entitled to reject the car https://www.thecarexpert.co.uk/rejecting-a-car/#2-...

I think because the fault arose and you reported it to them within 30 days, you're entitled to a full refund without any deductions.

Get rid.

The reliability issues precede these cars.

It'll be the rear diff next.

Get rid and buy something else is my advice. Otherwise i'll be tears at bedtime when it borks outside of warranty.

Get rid.

We’ve had two Disco 3s and a Disco 4. We don’t have one any more as every MoT cost at least £1k or more (the worst one on the Disco 4 was about £3.5k). However they’re brilliant vehicles when they’re working. If I were in your shoes I’d get the EML code read and see what’s wrong. I would hazard a guess that the plastic inlet manifold has cracked. Common fault and diagnosed by a smoke test. If you like it you may want your very reasonable dealer to chase the fault down and rectify it. But you should be aware that many more faults will follow and you’ve got to persevere if you like it!

Can sometimes be the one at the front pops off. We’ve got one to do in a few weeks time - already done the front, the ns manifold and now the os manifold.

I wonder if these issues were the reason for the last owner getting shot of it.

If there is a chance you can get your money back that’s what I’d do.

The sceptic in me would suggest they may not be as keen to assist with a refund as they have been to fix it as they won’t want it back probably. But if you have consumer rights then you have nothing to lose by getting your money back, keeping it clearly has risks. They hadn’t actually fixed anything first time around if the water in fuel issue returned.

Bit of an echo, but I'd be looking for my money back.

If your dealer is that good, they should be amenable to reason - it's clearly a lemon.

Thanks all, i'll call tomorrow and see how they take it(I did send a pic of the EML saying I'd like a refund now).

Hoping they'll be fairly ok.....

what to replace it with? Big family car, capable of pulling a 2 horse trailer. Not a landrover!

Land cruiser is the most obvious answer, much more reliable if not quite as impressive when everything's working on a disco... Worth a look, at least.

Dealers just change parts at a massive cost hoping it will fix the problem, without actually investigating the issue properly.

This happened to my dad's golf. VW wanted £1500 to replace the whole ECU after already spending £600 to fix a EML fault. Took it to a specialist, £60 sensor fixed the issue.

Have you considered taking it to a Land Rover specialist and having them have a look at it?
