We have a Disco 4 (used for towing a double horse box). It is an early one (59 plate) on 140k miles. It has towed most of its life. I love it. It is a superb towing vehicle. It has cost us a bit in repairs (manifolds and gearbox). The manifolds are a known weakness and a specialist can change them for about £1100 (do both at the same time). The gearbox was simply worn out from towing so was taken out and refurbished. Other than that, it has just been consumables/servicing and has been a very reliable, capable, companion.
Our neighbour has the same VW as that linked to above. A very nice car, but he has had electrical issues which have been annoying for him, but relatively easily fixed. I'm sure it would be a very good tow vehicle.
In your case, even though I love our Disco, I would probably take the VW. A troublesome Disco is a pain in the arse and the wallet.

its the size that I asked for. I'm struggling to work out if there's such thing as a 'working Disco'.
if they've not got anything I'd go for, i'm going to push for a refund.
There are an awful lot of Disco's on the road. They are a very good vehicle and people love them (me included). If they were THAT bad, then why are there so many still trundling around. It's just about finding the good ones, which is a bit of potluck. I have considered swapping mine for a newer one several times, but the fact that mine is a good one, makes me stick with what I know.if they've not got anything I'd go for, i'm going to push for a refund.
A decent LR specialist knows them inside out and how to fix them. They aren't particularly complicated vehicles.

I get that. I just wish we'd got a landcruiser, for the better build quality and reliablity. I can see why they cost more used even though they cost less new.A decent LR specialist knows them inside out and how to fix them. They aren't particularly complicated vehicles.
And the converse view is that many people (including me) can't stand them. Bottom of nearly every reliability survey with crap dealers. OP get out while you can!

As an update......
Dealer will not offer a refund.
Dealers offer for the Touareg, was the Touageg+£1500 refund.
We paid £24750 for the Discovery, a £2251 shortfall. Which I find quite amazing as an 'offer'. They won't do a swap on a cost neutral basis.
They've offered to take the car in again(its showing Nox related fault codes - likely to 'just' be a Nox sensor).
I've had zero 'fair use' of the car, so even though its over 30 days when I asked for a refund, I think the history backs it up. it has been multiple faults, I know I need to give them fair chance to repair, where does this actually stop though?

Contact citizens advice, and follow their instructions.
How did you pay for the car?
Did you use your credit card for any deposit?

I sooo wanted a Discovery 4 to replace my beloved Discovery 2 but niggles like this and worse tales of wallet emptying ability made me take heed of my head over my heart. Freelander 2 is an acceptable compromise in towing ability with very strong reliability. Huge boot and 7 seats not needed regularly enough to make the 4 a must have. Still love the look of them, especially a late facelift model.
