What would you do - problem 'new' car?
Discussion
My wife has a 2018 Touareg (last of the mk 2s) that tows an IWT horse trailer at least once a week, some of the time with two horses. With Pirelli all season tyres on, it does a good job and hasn’t struggled with the heavy trailer on wet grass. It fits the bill and has been acceptably reliable………..
……but even my wife admits that is nothing like as comfortable or as nice to travel in as my 2004 L322 Range Rover. Which needs unleaded and mechanical attention in equal measure. But we have all come to love it.
So I think it comes down to two things:
1. If you really like driving the Discovery, and other 4x4s don’t measure up, that’s an argument to find a good LR mechanic and stick with the Discovery. You might find that you enjoy it so much that you can forgive it’s addiction to the mechanics 4 post lift
Or
2. Where you stand in reliability for a vehicle towing horses. Everyone in the horse world knows of some of the horrific accidents that have happened with broken down boxes and lorries being hit at the side of the road. That was the clincher for my wife. Whilst my L322 had never let us down whilst towing the horses, she didn’t want to push her luck with a nearly 20 year old vehicle. Hence she got the Touareg.
You’ll know how bothered you are about having the Land Rover vs how much reliability towing the horses is your priority.
Finally, a left field choice. Full size 4x4 that can do it all with a family and horses - Mercedes GLS 3 litre diesel
Whatever you decide, very best of luck going forwards. You come across as a very reasonable guy, so hopefully the dealer will respect that and arrive at a solution that you are happy with.

So, to round the thread off........
I let them fix the issue(2 new NOX sensors).
48 hours later, critical oil warning on the dash. showing zero oil. I put in 3.5ltrs, no level.
They collected it yesterday, I got a refund today........... for the full purchase price. Just waiting for a refund on the warranty.
I think it might be an oil level sensor issue, however the car was dogst.
So upto £35k, ideally under £30, perfect world £25k.
tow a horse trailer with 2 small horse things. not have issues every 48 hours, fit a growing family of 5.
I'm tired of car hunting now.

What a saga, good to see they eventually coughed up *exactly what you were entitled to*.
If anyone wants to see just how awful these can be, have a look at the "LR Time" youtube channel. Engine rebuilds, body-off repairs, you name it - so much so this unassuming German couple have a full workshop and 2-post lift at home...
