Mazda CX5 2.2D Auto. £12k should get you a nice 2016 car with FSH.

Fair enough. What’s wrong with them?

My BIL had no complaints about his. We bought a 2017 petrol version based on his experience and ran it for 3 years. Only moved on as a 7 seater was needed. The CX5 is a high quality product, punches well above its price for quality and comfort. Engines aren’t very Pistonheads though!

Sounds like 2.2 has same issues as the 2.0 Ingenium

My girlfriend only has an Auto licence, I can guarantee this will never happen. 30 seconds after trying to drive a manual she will decide it is "too hard" and "doesn't like it" and give up.
Which is fine if I can get a trustworthy Automatic! I like the sluggish ones (I had a couple of 75's and loved the Auto gearbox)

There's a decent Astra I'll go view tonight. On the basis it's as described I guess we'll go ahead.

I suggested Insignia's but my partner doesn't like the look of them, which is fair enough, although they seem to look ok and cheaper.

What Taz1111 said - I believe oil dilution during regen/failed regen.

2012 Honda CRV 4th Gen 2.0i 49k miles. It's not a diesel but the petrol will be bullet proof and ULEZ compliant. Closer to your max budget, but with £2k to spare I doubt you'll have to spend any thing on it.

Great family cars, boot is big and rear seats slide forwards and back. With rear seats down it literally turns into a van! Wide opening doors as well.

If really wanting a diesel, which does suit the Honda auto better, then there's this one. Personally, I would stick with petrol though.

See Chops Garage on YouTube.... and avoid those.

I think you might be making a mistake writing off the V70, they're basically built for your exact usage pattern. The D4 with 177bhp odd is more than decent enough, and fitting Isofix yourself is a matter of the kit and four bolts, it's all but impossible to mess it up but I know that's the sort of thing women fuss about. Maybe tell her it's already fitted for that model year, then do it on the sly if she's that flaky?

I wasn't happy about it but when I had twins 12 years ago I bought a P2 V70 T5 and it was a superb car for the job, replaced by a brand new XC60 in 2016 that was equally superb as a family bus.

A much more "proper" car than some biscuit tin toy SUV too. There is a good reason ancient ones on moon mileage are still in demand, it'll be merrily running long after a Qashqai has been turned into razor blades.

Well, bad news, it's a Qashqai.

Justification was, it's FSH at a main dealer, 1 owner car. It's the 1.6 diesel with CVT, £30 road tax.

Hasn't left us with much to play with for maintenance but I've struggled to find much real evidence against either the engine or gearbox in this application (or, in any).

Ideally my partner will do the manual license in a year or two and open up better options.

Thanks for everyones input - I'd have got a low mileage 1.9 TDI Octavia estate myself.
The nissan CVT gearbox really hasnt got a good reputation so hopefully you've got a good warranty on it.

Looking at the 2.0 CDTI in Vauxhall's, can't see much about DPF problems but I think I'm right to consider any future problems.

How often do they need to be out on a run to keep the DPF ok?

Not sure why you think V70s don't have isofix... what year are you looking at?

Prices are all over the place but you'll get a very nice late model for £12k and something earlier (2011/12) for £7k. Both will have isofix as standard.

Great family cars.

We had the same search parameters albeit with a lower budget. Ended up getting a Fiat 500L MPW - 7 seater with adjustable seats. Tons of boot room, modern inside, it's an ugly old beast but at least we got a nice colour combo and diamond cut wheels. 0.9ltr turbo isn't particularly efficient, but it's only £30 a year road tax so gets the thumbs up from the missus.

Speaking of FIAT, you won't get a newer car than this, which fits your parameters, for around £12k:

I was in a similar position after getting my Volvo S60 written off and only getting £1900 back. Normally this would have been more than enough for a daily shed but everything I went to see was basically the stuff that WBAC wouldn’t take.

I ended up selling my Corvette to free up some cash so I could up my budget, one of the cars I went to see was this:

https://www.autotrader.co.uk/car-details/202304186...

I decided not to go for it because I only need an estate a couple of times a year when we go camping, so ended up getting something smaller for work. It was a really tidy car and drove fantastic (if a bit vanilla!).

Have you considered a BMW 1 series?

Cheap tax. Bulletproof engines.

Rear space is a bit reduced, but boot space is adequate enough IMO.
other than self destructing timing chains

I was wondering which engines were the bulletproof ones as well. The Car Ninja on YouTube has a BMW specialist business and was asked by Tyler Hoover which were the good BMWs, "None of them" was the reply.
