Asking for a friend. They're after a comfy run about something that's relaxing to drive, and doesn't cost the earth to buy or run that will be reliable. Basically something with a bit "waft". Ideally with a bit of performance.

This isn't really my area of expertise to be honest as I've always been into sports cars and hot hatches, so I'm wondering if what I'm asking for, for a maximum budget of around £5k(ish) is even possible.

Any suggestions?

What do you mean by cheapish to run, I'd say if your friend wants to waft & have a low bork factor then a CLK320 is a good option:
