I am in the process of buying a used car remotely for the first time, so looking for some words of wisdom from ye who are in the know....

I am buying outright (i.e. no finance), from a dealer, payment will be by bank transfer. Car will be delivered to my home.

I'm looking to get some insight into the "Distance Selling/Buying" rules, if the worst happens and it ends up being a lemon. I've asked all the usual questions and had good responses, so all looks good. So let's say when the car is delivered, do I:

A - Pay in full upon arrival, BEFORE going for a drive. Let the delivery guy go, and then start giving it the once over, tax it/insurance etc, take it for a drive, or
B - Check it all over, take it for a drive, note any niggles, etc, then make payment?

I'm thinking A - so then if there is any issues, I should have the distance selling laws to fall back on, and can state I paid in full before actually testing the car. If I did B, then I would have had a test drive and accepted the car upon payment, and any issues found afterwards would/could be difficult to sort out if the dealer suddenly becomes less friendly.

Or does none of this really matter and I'm way off on a tangent as usual? If I feel it I have been misled in any way and can prove it, then I have 14 days from delivery to reject it, or at least have them deal with any corrective work and get it sorted or come to an agreement?

TL:DR, how can I take delivery without make a schoolboy error?

Personally I would avoid, go see the car where ever it is, if you test drive find no faults & then purchase you will be able to sleep better.

Why play Russian roulette, especially if it’s a back street dealer, the car you have chosen, are there very few and far between for sale.

For me the enjoyment of purchasing a car, is also travelling to where the car is, and have a proper look and test drive, and then do face to face negotiation.

Appreciate one can also get a lemon doing the above, but the risk maybe less.

Can’t be taking a chance if the dealer doesn’t play ball, especially if the car has faults.

Yes, this was my initial thought, having done so plenty times before. I once did a 900-mile round trip to buy a car.
Figured I'd try the home delivery service offer this time. I'm sure there are hundreds of cars delivered every day, just wanting to make sure I avoid making any silly mistakes, which isn't beyond me wink
