hi Piston heads,

I want to buy my first Porsche. Ideally I want a 991 GTS.

Where are look for one?
There special sourcing companies. Would you recommend them?

What to watch out for if found one and want to look at it?

Many thanks in advance for your help

Having recently purchased a 991 I can offer some advice.

Look in the usual places, Porsche OPC's (Official Porsche Centres), AutoTrader, the classifieds here and Collecting Cars.

There are loads of Porsche specialists, where about in the UK are you, I can recommend a few (mainly South East & around London).

There’s also a Facebook Group, Porsche Owners UK

I saw this 991 GTS listed there:

In Surrey specifically, have a look at Cridfords, GT One (Chertsey). Bramley Motor Cars normally have a decent selection of Porsche's too.

Also in Surrey, the Official Porsche Service Centre Brooklands carry a range of pre-owned vehicles.

Luckily you have lots of well rated specialists pretty close to your doorstep too:

MR Sportscars (Hitchin) exclusively focus on the 997 & 991 so may be worth a try first.
Northway Porsche (Reading/Theale)
Ashgood (nr Heathrow)
RSJ (Slough)
911 Virgin (Iver/Uxbridge)
JZM (Kings Langley)
Harbour Cars (Chichester)

I bought my 991 Turbo from Northway and they were great to deal with. Looked at some cars at Ashgood and they were really open too. MR Sportscars looks to be well run, check out the owners (Raj) videos on YouTube.

There's also a decent book that I found helpful called 'Porsche 911 (991): All first generation models 2012 to 2016 (Essential Buyer's Guide)' by Adrian Streather.

If you find a private car with Porsche warranty it's fully transferable. However, once the car goes into the trade (for example with a specialist) the warranty is technically voided. To add the Porsche warranty to a car you purchase independently you need to have owned the car for 90 days before you can put it through the 111 point check.

Hope this helps for now, any questions fire away smile Good luck with the search...

Hi
Found a candidate which looks good at an independent dealer.

What is the best way to get it checked.
Go to a POrsche garage for a proper check?

Thanks

There are a few specialist indy's that do Porsche pre-purchase inspections. Although I don't have any recommendations I'm afraid. I You could try Porsche, but as I said, when I bought mine, they were insistent that I needed to own the car for 3 months before I could do it.

I essentially took a bit of a gamble with mine but really got a good vibe from Northway and placed a lot of trust in their reputation / approach.

Sorry, I have no experience of Hexagon although I've heard of them.

What prompted the switch to looking at 997's? The 997.2 is a great car, however depending upon your usage it's probably worth trying both still.

The 997 seems like a decent price and most likely only going to go up in price.
Having said that. The 991 shape I still prefer

If your problem is mostly one of finding the time to look, then you might consider a car broker. I can recommend James at Apex Lifestyle (no personal interest, just used him myself).

https://apexlifestyle.co.uk/about

He works for footballers, City bankers, etc and really does work hard for you to get you want you want. Not cheapest option, but lovely guy to work with, and makes the whole process easy and enjoyable. Can help you sell too.

On a separate note, I’ve had a 964, two 996s, a 997 and now got a 991 (all C2s and C4s) and I think the 991 is the best yet.

The new lighter body makes it considerably more fun to drive than the 997, which I thought was very dull, and nearly put me off 911s. It is larger, but never feels big, the interior is a grade above, looks beautiful and it’s just a joy to drive. I’m particularly pleased I got the manual gearbox, a 7 speed and a rarity these days on a modern car.

No expert on the performance variants - I use mine as a daily so prefer “base” models with a bit more comfort - but certainly my experience is the 991 is well worth the extra.

The 997 is lighter than the 991, if you want a manual then the 6 speed with the SSK is better than the 7 speed in the 991.1, the 997 feels more like a 911 of old but you may or may not like that, the 991 is a more grown up car.

Personally I'd go for a 991.1 GTS with PDK, the engine sounds amazing.

Don't want this to come across the wrong way, but has anyone actually clarified which 991 GTS? There are two major versions, along with various models of each.

The 991.1 is a 3.8L NA engine with 430bhp, whereas the 991.2 GTS is a 3.0 F6T with 450bhp. As is often the case with turbocharging, you gain epic straight line performance, but lose the sound and response of the NA.

Also both came in 2 and 4WD, manual vs PDK, etc. No mention of gearboxes, but the PDK has got better with each iteration, so would technically be better in the .2 as well. Not sure if one of them came with a 7 speed manual option.

Edit: the .2 is different inside too, with the updated PCM, different steering wheel, and the sports chrono control moved from the centre column to a dial on the steering wheel. Anyway, yeah, first stop is to choose on which one as they're very different.

That's a great point!

I'd say the 991.1 GTS is a vehicle right in the sweet spot, 3.8 litre, naturally aspirated flat six with an amazing soundtrack. What's not to love?

Can't go wrong with either to be fair (or even a nice 997.2).

i haven driven now all of them as C2. The 997.2 and the 991.1 / 991.2. For me the 997. As always it depend why you buying it I think.
For me the 991.1 is the preferred. The sound wins it for me and in performance I don't think there is much difference
