Michelin Cup 2's

I am definitely sad thinking that the sidewalls look cool, the tread is also cool and am prepared to put up with the road noise (noticeable) for the improved handling and grip whilst doing 30mph around Chelsea wink
The tyre noise of Cup 2's is considerably less than Toyo R888s but more that my normal P-zeros.
And yes, the side profile view of the tyre does look cool, but I think less so of the tread pattern.

OK, so an update Nobs:

Fitted Michelin Pilot Sport 4s all round. Fitters said 18/27 air semed low for these so increased a little (19/28 as didn't want to move off of factory spec yet) for weekend run the Motors by The Moat Leeds Castle. A smoother ride but nothing else noticable. Specs are top for these tyres - see below (also see report above - came out first of 10).

Cost: £540 fitted and balanced WOW! + £20 for new steel valves (impossible to find and original valves, which are paper light, do not exist so you have to fit the heavier steel one's), And once removed the valves did need changing, the rubbers were compressed and corroded so suggest you consider this at your next rubber change. These are longer than OEM - the fronts fit level with the socket but the rears stick out a bit.You wouldn't really notice it though.

These are the valves and even SW Lotus supply the same so I doubt you'll find originals:

The nearest quote for these was a whopping £350 more so how so cheap I hear you ask! Costco is the answer. They only sell three makes and Michelin is one.

One issue: they broke a lug off of a centre cap so also suggest you check that all four lugs are present when you change next. Have sorted now and won't let a fitter remove them again!

Other options - READ CAREFULLY IF YOU NEED NEW TYRES NOW!:

My second choice, their Bridgstone S001s come out at an amazing £497 BUT THERE'S A SPECIAL OFFER OF £50 OFF until 14th May - so less than £450 all in - get in there! clap

Note you need to be with, or are, a member and prices change daily.

Keep an eye out for my seperate post on wheel torque settings - interesting!

When I last changed my road tyres, I tried Costco but they didn't have our sizes.
Will bear in mind next time they need changing. Don't believe they do Cups.
Also, IIRC they won't change tyres if presented with just wheels - they need to fit to a vehicle. Safety 'n all.

I think I'm going for a set of Michelin pilot sport 4's this week as they're apparently a move on from the super sports (which they no longer make the rears in our size) all the reviews say they're great tyres for the road so we shall see! £540 fitted from f1 auto centre.

Are you all intending on wet weather driving? The Cup 2's come in the right size and hardly any more money than PS4s

Although I may get PS4s for the front of my RS4 as have SS on the back and they dont make them any more

I chose the Michelin Pilot's for their all round readiness and excellence in the wet - over a track ready/slick design which I find a tad frustrating when cold wink

Ideally we need a track set and an all rounder set.

I don't intend to do any wet weather driving but as this is England and not California there's always a possibility of getting caught out. I also drive my car through winter (when it's dry) so would prefer a good road tyre as I have a set of r888's for track.

are the R888r much quieter than the old R888?

Just that Ive killed my rears (yet again) and need to get a set.... the R888 are my everyday tyre as they actually work in the cold and the Cups1 are my track (as they don't work ever in the cold).... BUT the old R888 are much noisier than the cups.
According to the 'tyre specs' the new R888R is same noise volume as all the others now which sounds promising... but is it true?

Incidentally I run lower tyre pressures than you are Rob, but they are track tyres and thus have a harder sidewall and thus safer at lower pressures.

Lol, obviously running too much power! Mine are the old r888's so can't comment on noise, they're very sticky though.

Hi all,

I had promised to report back on the Toyo R1Rs I fitted on my M12 GTO3.
They genereally felt very good, as stiff as I had hoped them to be, nice for fast corners.
Problem is just that they are substantially wider than my previous tyre (Goodyear Eagle F1) despite being the same dimension. The difference is 0,7cm (rear) and 0,5cm (front). Since my car is very low (just 10cm ground clearance) this actually created a problem when driving fast on country roads. Outer edge of the rear wheel arch had contact with the tyre at least twice, not good. Also, I seem to have less space when turning the front wheels.

Bottom line: Tyres will be replaced again with probably Eagle F1s and I would only recommend the Toyos for anyone with a higher ride height.

Car is with Jetstream at the moment to sort out my engine stalling issue. Looking forward driving it back home (650miles 😳).

Cheers, Leo
