'bout 200 miles a tank (that's leaving about 15l remaining)

I've done a 300 mile trip @ a very steady 70mph and the same trip pressing on a bit wink. Got 24.5mpg the slow trip and 24mpg the fast. Go fast then! As Rob says between 200 and 230 miles between filling is a good guide.

Although whether your fuel gauge will agree with the reality is another matter. I'm convinced mine reads empty when there's still a significant amount in the tank. I think the most I've put in it is around 45 litres to fill it up when it has been reading close to empty. I'm sure the fuel tank has a higher capacity than that - not sure, but I think it's 60 litres.
I'm also paranoid re. advice in the manual about not running it much below 1/4 tank, so I start looking for a refuel as soon as it gets to 1/4 tank. Maybe I worry too much?? confused

Conrad.

The 1/4 tank issue is if you're giving it stick around the bends the fuel pickup doesn't, the engine runs lean and it's piston eating time.....

If you're just cruising along you'll be fine. I just make a note to slow right down at the 1/4 tank mark.

mine used to read empty but on fill would only take 35 litres

'Way back when' the fuel gauge was calibrated by the factory to read empty when there was still 20 litres remaining in the tank and I understand the tank capacity was 60 litres. As previously mentioned that was to protect the engine from a lean mixture in the event of 'enthusiastic' cornering. That applied to my car when new (2.5L no. 077) but you may like to check that the policy was continued onto the newer cars.

Mine is one of the first 3R's and my tank is still calibrated to read empty at the 45l mark. when flat out hooning i see 140-150 miles to 45l, steady motorway gives me 200-220 on the same 45l.

http://www.gto3.com/models/index.htm

As per above link, all cars have a 60 litre tank.

I was under the impression that the guages had been calibrated to read empty when there is still 15 litres in the tank so as not to allow and detting on track or in tight high "g" cornering on the road when all the fuel rushes to one side of the tank and the feed to the engine runs out etc etc.

That must be the case, as when I (and most of you) fill up, we only get 40-45 litres in even though the guage reads empty.

So,

a) There is no need to re-fill at 1/4 tank mark on the guage. (maybe do so on a proper trackday to be safe)

b) There is a good 50 miles left in the tank after in reads empty if you're just motorway cruising.

I have had 250 miles from a tank before when "testing" this a little. I'd say you could prop push it to 300 if you were desparate.

I reckon about an average of 22 mpg.

When I fill it up the needle is off the end and then does not move for 100+ miles. Then the gauge drops like a stone.

I never it run too low because when I had my Sport 350 I ran out about a mile from home and felt like a right tt at the side of the road. The pleasing thing was that a chap stopped and gave me a can of petrol and did not even want paying for it !! How nice is that ?

BTW - I filled up my runaround today on the motorway and noticed that BP Ultimate was 107.9p, that's £4.90 a gallon.

3Rs and M400s have ~12l ish when the needle covers the 0 mark. As mentioned, early 2.5s read zero earlier.

240-250miles is fine for motorway stuff, although at 80mph you really should have a break every 2.5-3 hours, or 200ish miles, so why not just fill it up each time you have a break?

I fill at a quarter tank usually and the mileage reads about 150-180 every time!!
Perhaps a little less on the right foot would help. scratchchin

Not being a nanny, there is lots of research that shows after ~2.5hrs of driving your chance of having an accident increases. As I like you lot so much I'm just looking out for you all wink

Dear Mr Joust,

Do we have to have a break after every 2.5hours of elapsed driving time or just when its all done in one 2.5 hour stint?

LOL! So when I was coming into Calais with needle on empty pissing myself about finding a petrol station I needn't have worried. The things you learn...
