My dad collects a Y Performance at the end of the month. Will be interesting to compare with my wife's Y Long Range (from the OG batch back at the start of the year). Expecting even more performance, a better ride, added parcel shelf and, err, missing parking sensors. heheeek

I have a Y performance on order, you must take some pics and share a mini review when he gets it. What colour did he go for - outside and inside?

Will do! Think it’s the 26th he gets it. Car is white paint, white seats… the exact opposite of my wife’s one! Will post pics.

Thats the exact spec I have on order white on white, can't wait.

Don't think I'll be seeing mine though until April next year - I'm saying that as a worst case scenario, so if it turns up sooner its a bonus.

I have done just under 4k miles in 6 weeks in my new model Y and I am very happy with it, my only complaints are the auto high beam, auto wipers and turning circle. Overall, it is a great car and I like having the option of using the tesla chargers when the normal ones are busy or broken, which has happened a few times.

The turning circle is seriously irritating. I keep having to have 2 goes at parking spaces.

I said I’d report back here once I’d had a go in the 2023 Y Performance that my dad collected today, so here I am. I went with him as he was a bit apprehensive about the whole collection experience (i.e. Tesla just kind of leave you to it biggrin) and he was kind enough to let me drive it the 40 miles or so back to his house.

For context, I’ve previously owned a 2019 3 Performance and frequently drive my wife’s 2022 Y Long Range (with added Acceleration Boost) that we’ve had for coming up on a year now.

There’s four main points to discuss between the two Model Ys really, and they are the performance, looks, ride and Tesla craziness*. Everything else is basically identical, except for the addition of a parcel shelf in the newer car (although these were also fitted to all but the very first batch of 2022 cars).

1. Performance. It’s really fast - unnecessarily so to be honest, but it’s great fun for children like myself. It’s not hugely more accelerative than the LR with Boost, but it is noticeably so, particularly below 30mph-ish so where the slower car feels somewhat artificially held back. The difference between the two is similar to the difference between LR without Boost and LR with it, except that in this instance it’s a lot more than £1500! There’s a bit more whine to the motors under full throttle, which I very much welcomed.

2. It definitely looks better. I mean, of course it does as it’s got bigger wheels, red brake callipers and the carbon lip spoiler. Some proportions are kinda weird in the way all Model Ys are, but I like them. The wheels are really lovely - 21” (my car has the 20” ones) and are a very dark satin grey rather than the satin black of the 20”. The Pirelli Tyres leave very little room for kerb mishaps, but the Y is an easy car to manoeuvre and they’re not really much more vulnerable than the 20” ones. The standard 19” will obviously be the most forgiving (and efficient!) but they look a bit crap.

3. The ride is improved. It’s not hugely better, but considering it’s on wheels that are an inch larger it’s a big step in the right direction. To make a fair comparison between 2022 and 2023 set-ups you’d need to drive cars of exactly the same spec, but the fact that the newer car is better when it should be worse on paper says it all. It’s nicely judged because it’s taken the edge off the ride, but not lost any of the sportiness that it’s always had. The earlier car has always been fine at speed on the motorway, but it’s around town and on country lanes that the initial suspension tuning left a little to be desired. This, in the most part, has now been resolved, but don’t expect a ride like an old Citroën CX.

4. * It has no parking sensors. hehe For sure it looks better in not having the little hole punch circles dotted along the bumpers, but the dents and scratches that will inevitably take their place on many cars are surely worse. biggrin In seriousness though, Tesla gonna Tesla by delivering cars with no sensors and without a working camera software solution, but I’m confident this will arrive shortly. As I said, it’s an easy car to park anyway and it’s got a load of cameras and the driver has eyes.

Also forgot to say, build quality is again excellent - car was completely immaculate in terms of condition, if not the last word in detailing mastery.

Thank you for taking the time to post that, hope you dad enjoys it and the acceleration in such a big car!

Also nice to read some positive / balanced views on the car, I rarely read EV posts on this site as I’m bored of the negativity.

The Model Y is not a perfect car, I don’t think such a thing exists. I’m chuffed to bits with my LR, and it’s interesting to read how the performance model compares.

Thanks for the write up on the Model Y Performance, I'm actually getting mine now on the 22nd December, so a nice early Christmas present!

Went to Tesla Birmingham today to see one in the flesh, looks so much better with the bigger wheels and lower ride height!

5k into our model y now

It’s been flawless so far , only grip so far am having problems getting the happiness levels up on fallout shelter

Re driving I’d rate it as 7/10 for ride quality vs cars it’s segment , 9 for performance , 8 handling. Build quality has held up superbly looks as new inside with hard miles doing school run. Updates happen automatically. All the features are just so convenient, auto climate on, built in security camera , dog mode etc

It’s not a fun car to drive , if never take it out for a drive or take the long route home but it gets you from a-b v competently . I’d take it hands down over our Land Rover mk5 unless need the extra seats or space

If it’s just myself and not going into a city center it’s the hot hatch, as good as Y is for driving fun the hot hatch is way ahead

Not putting down your experience, which sounds incredibly frustrating, but even the Germans can have a bad day on the production line.

My brand new 2016 Mercedes E class came with a satnav that didn’t work, then a boot that would only open with the key fob (that took them 3 attempts to get it right) and then the rear camera (hidden in the Mercedes badge) kept opening whenever it wanted.

That was my 3rd new Mercedes, each came with problems, but the E class was the worst. All fixed under warranty, but like you, takes hassle and time to sort out.

Model Y LR delivered on Thursday. 300 ish miles in. It replaced a Discovery 4; our other cars are a 2001 Defender and a 2003 RS6.

I initially didn’t bond with it but having driven on a mix of crap A and really crap B roads it seems ok handling wise. Worse than the Disco but better than the RS6 on Bilstein coilovers.

Straight line acceleration is great. I think the RS6 is faster from, say, 30 to 70, but it’s a close-run thing. We may explore this further!

The interior has grown on me and the voice commands make it easier to deal with. But the best thing is charging at home, setting the climate for departure time and enjoying a warm, fast car. Also seriously comfy in the back for my 6’3” son and also for me. Two dogs happy in the boot, and we squeezed in a 9’ Christmas tree this afternoon.

That's a bit disappointing. I've done nearly 30,000 in my 3LR without an issue. Hope I'm not tempting fate! smile

Do you mean ride or handling? We had a disco 4 and thought it handled like a boat. Our disco 5 is a lot better but it’s still a v heavy car and need to drive as such.

The Y drives like a much lighter car than it is , ride is poor and one of its weak points..we mitigated than by getting the smaller alloys

I meant ride - sorry. The Disco 4 does indeed handle like a boat!
