That silhouette has a touch of the original 5 series GT, regularish front but a shocking arse, let’s hope for Tesla it looks better in colour,

TBH, I don't think they needed to be any more imaginative.

After all, a new Model X is a circa £100k car, so it isn't a bad idea to use the same basic silhouette.

And besides, if they get rid of the nutty gull wing Model X rear doors, keep the Model 3's newly increased charging rate and decent range, retain decent performance, dramatically increase the practicality by increasing the boot size, and keep the starting cost to around £40k, I think it will be extremely popular.
I think so. The fancy doors are probably too expensive. No need for it to be as cheap as the 3, it’s an SUV. And why not take styling from the X, as you say it’s an expensive car that some will aspire to. No reason why it won’t be the most popular model to date as it’s the first one that hits the segment sweet spot, it’ll be a fast, premium SUV in the 40-70k bracket.

Nice enough looking thing

Colour sensitive. The blue one in the video on the Tesla webpage looks better than the red one imo

Looks very similar to my wifes old Civic. Which was a very functional car, massive boot and decent passenger room.

I suppose boring and conventional is what lots of people want to see from Tesla.

Master stroke - reveal a boring looking, far from finished car, lots of people think they may as well buy an M3

Highlight seems to chrome delete.

Glad I didn’t wait up or wake up to watch

Share price down a shade in out of hours trading,

Declaring slow super charger roll out was because they’re waiting for v3, yeah, like I believe that.

How utterly utterly boring for every one, what next a special 'P line' trim so people can have some P badges added for an extra £3k smile.

When Musk realises he probably will offer it (just look at the alloy wheel upgrade prices). But you’d still be getting more value than 3k spent on FSD.

£4900 is what I paid for FSD, so £400 more than AP at time of order.

AP is not worth £4500, not even the £2000 on the current 'reduced' price, £1k is what Tesla should be charging for it max. But I like tech and always find it hard to resist new things even though I should.

100% will not be ordering AP or FSD on wifes Model Y order if we end up going that way. I still hope to see something good from Lexus though.

So no new CANBUS system as previous promised. I presume still has a 12V battery like everyone else. No new chassis. No powered doors are all.

What a let down, the boring brigade looks like they have really made them selves at home at Tesla frown.

It’s a parts bin raid but to keep the cost down that makes sense. If there’s a lot of M3 under the surface I can see them sharing the production line sooner than later, take some pressure off M3 sales etc which seem to be a way off being 500k a year sustainably. It’s actually sensible if as you say a little boring.

No mention of powered hatch, so who knows.

Nothing on its ride height/ground clearance or ability to tow.

So far not many reasons for me to wait another 3 plus years.

Let's be realistic - we won't be seeing these on UK roads until 2023.

I really wish they'd be more adventurous with the styling! It's basically a Model X with a Model 3 front end from a visual point of view.

I suspect it will have class leading economy with their usual fast and snappy infotainment, but I think more and more will be tempted away by things like the Polestar 2 etc. I mean, I'd almost say a Kia eNiro is more appealing in some ways!

They can’t risk anything that will spook the market at the moment, no one would believe they had the funds to do anything other than basically duplicate the 3 and it makes sense anyway.

They’ve got over 18 months to sneak out some tweets about some additional stuff that’s super cool and will be included like an automated minicab phone number roof placard that drops down when you turn off the Uber app and aren’t taking customers. biggrin

Well, that was all a bit underwhelming.

Another year at least before we see what they’ll actually be selling.

Whilst the styling is not exciting, one point for the nerds like me, the drag coefficient (cd) they have managed to achieve on this new car.is pretty good.

When model S was launched it had a cd of 0.24. Then they managed to achieve the same value for model X, despite the higher roofline. And this new Model Y has a reported cd of 0.23.

As a comparison, the i-pace has a much higher value of 0.29. This is the main reason why the range at higher speeds is so much less on the Jaguar.

I think we will see legacy car makers be tempted to start creating new corporate 'design languages' to achieve much better drag coefficient performances in the next couple of years. This is going to make many cars look similar to Tesla.
