They are selling it here as you can put down to £100 to reserve one. Wasn’t sure we’d get it due to it being a ‘full-size’ truck, but apparently so.

I think Elon following his mantra of making the car that he would want to buy is not a good idea here because a) he’s mental and b) Blade Runner isn’t real.

The specs sound really great, but I think it’ll take a bit of time for folks to get their head around the looks. An odd thing to do, especially in the very conservative US pickup market - all I (and others, I’m sure!) want are trucks like we have now, but with electric drivetrains and performance.

Why not? It looks like it has a steel load bed and sides; from the pictures it would appear that it's on air suspension so you can lower the back to a sensible height; and it even seems to have a built-in telescopic ramp thing for loading anything on wheels. It looks weird, but I can't see how the weirdness impacts the practicality of the load bed.

I guess the target market for these things isn't really "the trade" anyway but rather rural Americans who want a family car which can carry "outdoorsy" stuff with minimal fuss and have garages and parking spaces 20 feet wide and 60 feet long.

Fact check: Homer didn't design the Cayonero.

You can put £100 down now on the Tesla GB site https://www.tesla.com/en_gb/cybertruck

I suspect this will sell for a bit to the Tesla fans and those who actually like the styling (I wouldn't say I like it, but I think it's an amusing caricature of some of the silly SUV/truck design language), then a more conventional one on the same underpinnings will come along later. This way gets them far more press than a generic Tundra/Silverado/F150 clone.

Given Elon's track record, when the actual delivery might be, and what the final truck would look like are, needless to say, likely to be very different from what is being said now.

Whether to place a deposit? I would wait given that placing a deposit had little impact on Model 3 delivery priority.

I must be the only person to find this brilliant.

But not as good as the Rivian for me. I do love the Rivian.

Has this been specifically designed to rescue a football team from a flooded cave?

Is that in the sense of the design or that it looks like someone took half an hour with a ruler to come up with it? You may have a point either way

Low deposit value is deliberate, that way they will get loads of deposits as it’s low risk to do so. With lots of deposits they can announce its popular and attempt to artificially bump up the stock price.

Classic Tesla when they’re struggling with the financials. Something is for sure though, some clever investors are sucking out huge amounts of money from the stock during its regular rises and dips.

It was basically a concept unveil, not a car launch. Timing is key and quite revealing.

The glass demo was just stupid, as was the hammer demo.

Even the crowd of hardcore Tesla fans present were unusually subdued.

We’ll see. The Roadster isn’t here yet, the Model Y isn’t here yet. Why not throw in a pick up and an ATV that you can’t buy.

Roll on the next few weeks if interest tails off again and the share price falls away like last year.

Model 3 sales are still key to their future, I really hope they can keep selling at a decent level.

I like it. Having seen the pictures of how versatile it can be when customised for safari trips and general bakkie use, I'm impressed, especially given the performance. This could work really well in the right environment - not the UK so much, I would imagine.

In SA and the USA bakkies/pick-ups are extremely popular and I can certainly see this being a success there, the UK is more into it's Estates, which I don't like one bit.

Elon is definitely making a strong case for a 3-car Tesla garage; Model S, Roadster and Cybertruck. Great. smile

I liked the armoured glass demonstration. Both pieces of glass were very effective at not breaking - up until the moment they were struck with something.

It was pretty stupid of Musk to do that, that is exactly what happens to armored glass when you hit it.

The top layer of glass shatters and is held by the plastic layers. It looks broken but it's actually doing its job perfectly.

A full cup of coffee thrown by a Captain in a wee strop also has the same effect. laugh

Edit: And firing everything involving an electric car into the basement that is this subforum is just speeding up the death of this forum as a whole.

It should be in GG.
