I'd somehow missed this news. It's a real shame for me, that performance with the claimed 500+ mile range would have been great.

The Plaid is still launching in the US this week (apparently).

Performance wise I doubt the Plaid+ had anything useable over the plaid. The Plaid is quicker than the outgoing Performance/P100D and if you want any performance its above 50mph, no that its lacking already.

The loss is the extra range the new batteries were going to deliver.

For a car that wasn't due to arrive in the US until next year, it seems odd to drop it at this late stage unless they'd effectively given up on the engineering (too expensive to complete, not possible or looking at production capacity next year when they were due to make it, there was not enough) or they weren't selling the Plaid and Long Range versions (doubtful, and if that was the case in the US then they had the option of selling internationally). Either way, they could have just left it there and taken forever to deliver it like they do with a few other models.

I reckon (based on nothing) that they will use as many of the 4680 cells as possible in the volume cars like the Cybertruck (if it ever actually happens) and the Model 3/Y. Why bother in the S if 390 miles range is "good enough".

Personally I wish they would put them is the S but it looks like a long wait if ever.
