Test drove a model Y at the weekend and discovered that they are being delivered without any parcel shelf for the boot. The advisor said they didn't know if or when the UK will be supplied with them.

Sounds petty to not order a car over a parcel shelf, but I can just see it getting broken into the moment you leave anything in the boot that might be of value. The rear window is tinted, but you can still see through it by looking up close.

Any more info on here on when they might be supplied with a parcel shelf?

I asked (more for noise than security) and got a non committal answer.
I assumed it’s not getting one and I’ll cope.

The Berlin models have a parcel shelf. UK will start being supplied with those at the end of this year with the MYP.

Third party ones exist. About £60 I think

Just did a quick search on a certain rain forest related site and there are a couple of options on there already.

Certain reviewers also reckoned that you couldn't see much into the boot anyway, due to the angle of the screen and position relative to the backs of the rear seats. I'd be interested to see it in person!

I could definitely see in the boot through the window from the underground carpark the test drive started in.

Maybe I'm just expecting a bit too much, the 3rd party ones seem a bit pony to me - screwing on extra bits of plastic to the sides so you can mount the cover.

It's pretty much a non issue due to the rear design, at least from a security perspective. I thought it would be, but having had our car for over a month now and travelled extensively I can't say its ever been a worry, you really do need to get up close and personal to see anything through the glass. I thought about getting an after market one but now think it would probably just get in the way. The ones that work better are those that lift up with the boot hatch but thats not how Tesla are doing it.

As an aside, the rear seats can recline slightly and the parcel shelf is in a fixed position, so if a seat is more upright, you can still see into the boot through the gap. Yes its darker with the load cover, but if you're worried about thieves checking out your boot contents, the torch on a mobile phone would give them enough illumination through the gap to see your contents anyway.

Without a parcel shelf, where do you keep your Umbrella and box of tissues?

Do they definitely not have a parcel shelf then? Surely it means more noise in the cabin

Everyone I know who had one delivered from the first batch had no shelf and yes, it will mean more noise in the cabin.

There are third party ones appearing that can be added, not sure if it makes much difference to the cabin noise.

I've heard the German made cars may be getting the parcel shelf, but no sign of it on the UK cars.

A lot of delays are said to be because of China and Covid, but I thought the Model Y performance cars were due from Germany so not sure why we're not seeing more of them, unless production is really slow. Same kind of thing is happening in the states with Texas, they're supposed to be making Model Ys with a new battery but not a single review to be seen. It would be interesting to see if the Texas cars have the parcel shelf too.

Video covering the details of cars built in Texas is showing the parcel shelf is now fitted, so presumably it is just a matter of time before all factories adopt it

New batteries seem to have a smaller capacity as well, although that may be just a case of eeking out the limited supply rather than the cells themselves have a lower capacity by volume which would be unusual.

Thanks for the info! Was that on a LR or Performance model?

I don’t think any performance models have been delivered to the Uk yet
