Thinking about taking the plunge and going electric. Looking at 2018 model S 75D. There is one from a dealer near me that ticks all the boxes but I have been told that the half shaft has been replaced twice (under warranty). Is this a major red flag? I have heard rumours of the half shaft issue with Model S cars. Anyone know if there is an aftermarket permanent fix? Or if some way of avoiding wearing out these half shafts? Cheers

The half shaft issues relate to 'vibrations' under hard acceleration.

The solution isn't just the half-shafts, its the motor mounts that needs replacing with the latest versions. ALL S/Xs seem to suffer this until Tesla sorted out the motor mounts. Ask the dealer if the 'clevis' mounts were changed, if so you should fine, if not, get an warranty, or get the dealer to sort it before buying.

Other 'known' failures on these cars:

1: PTC heater - new version was released a few years ago, if not already replaced put aside about £800 for a replacement at some point.
2: Front control arms - new version released in around 2020, another not if but when item.
3: Old MCU 1 unit - It will fail, Tesla can upgrade it to the newer MCU 2 unit for around £2000
4: Front LED running lights on the S - £800-1000 per light I believe, seems to be S specific
5: Door handle mechanisms - Multiple revisions, early versions failed quite often - £300ish I believe each door?
6: Some seats had weak fixing to the floor - New seats are £2500+ from Tesla, but actually a repair at an independent is much cheaper.

Don't ask me how I 'know' about these issues. If on the X, you can you also add front door actuators, FWD switch to the list smile.
