If it’s the same keyless entry technology as the physical key on my model s it’s a strange logic (but works).

When I park my car very close to my house and the key is is inside but close (like within 2 meters) but the key is static (ie still - for a period of time - say 1 minute), then the car will lock and not be able to be opened.

But if I move my key out of range (say upstairs) and then back to the original place, then the car unlocks.

I had a request from my Tesla app the other day to access my “physical movement” from my phone. Firstly I thought Tesla are going to be disappointed by any data from me on that front, but in hindsight maybe this is a way that they are improving the exact situation you described.

Does the message in the app stating ‘phone key connected’ mean that somebody could open the car if they tried the handle? Yesterday my car was about 30m away from me in a car park and I was inside an office meeting room. Car was visible through window.

Today I am at home and car is a similar distance away from my home office and app says ‘phone key disconnected’.

I was curious about this so just tested. I’m sat in my office about 5m away and a wall from my car. App says ‘phone key connected’. I’ve just left my phone on the desk, gone out to the car and tried the door. It opened.

Current version of the app on an iPhone 15 Pro and car a 2020 Model 3 with the latest updates. Also had that message about wanting permission to access movement data. So something isn’t right currently, as I know it used to be the case where I’d need to get out of the front door and be right by the car for it to unlock - kids would usually run ahead and be trying the doors which wouldn’t unlock until I’d got close with the phone.

Going to disable the phone key for now. Car goes back at the end of its lease on Monday and it would be embarrassing to have a problem now. Pin to drive is on anyway.
