I don't begrudge using public chargers at all, although I'm very much looking forward to charging from solar/battery during the summer months. It's more that the round trip journey to London is enough of a chore already, without needing to factor in a stop. If I can do it without, great. If I can't, I'd probably buy a cheaper new EV with inferior range.
If you go for a cheaper one with an inferior range, you will get hit twice. A lower range will 100% guarantee you have to stop, plus you won't have access to the Tesla network.

There are not many EVs which will actually do 250 motorway miles without charging, especially in the winter.

Also, the first 50 miles of your trip, depending on your choice, could also be worse for range than the motorway leg.

It's such a balancing act.

I almost took a cheap lease on a MY LR this week (still might, tbh), but am now back to looking at 2021 M3 LRs.

Just to clarify, this isn't a commute. This is just a trip that will happen a couple of times a month, where it would be ideal to avoid charging if possible.

I'm getting the sense that I'm probably asking too much to do it comfortably, which was a hypothesis coming into this, so I may as well just buy the cheaper car.
You may as well. Generally well established that unless it’s a company car and you’re saving on benefit in kind, EV (in England anyway) is a great way to get around but it’s not a money saving exercise.
Good stuff, thanks. Looks like I'm going to go buy the £30k used LR DM.
Awesome! You won’t regret it, it will be a great car. FYI I get around 220miles in a model Y in winter. So a long range model 3 should do it.

One other thing I would add.

The charging network away from Tesla is now growing very fast, and the options can be better.

Covered chargers with a nice Starbucks, etc., instead of a car park in the back of a trading estate with no toilets.

I would have a look at your regular route and see what options there are, look for places that are 150kW plus and have more than eight bays.

It just opens up other options to you, I don't think you are now stuck with Tesla for regular long journeys.

To be honest, I still think we'll probably end up taking the Land Rover for longer journeys. I wasn't blown away by the level of wind and tyre noise (albeit on 20s) of the M3 that we test drove, and the ride on the Discovery is orders of magnitude better.

Having had solar and batteries put in last year, the goal was always to move our second car from a PHEV to an EV to speed up the payback period and take advantage of the frankly ridiculous overnight rates our energy provider offers. It also means that we can stick to making sure that the mileage we do in London (not huge, but not insignificant) is done on EV power.

To that end, I'd imagine that the amount of charging we'll do out and about would be very minimal.
