Whats the difference between the SE and the SE-L? The only diff I can see is the Mark Levinson audio, but lots of the SE's appear to have been upgraded?
Levinson audio/speakers upgrade, rear boot spoiler, sunroof.
ACC/PCS (same idea as MB's Distronic) was a cost option on the GS300 SE-L, but included in the 450h (I think), and the 430 was only available as a single fully equipped model, including wood trim steering wheel.
On the '08 facelifts, the 460 was introduced, and a number of standard fit items became cost options.

couple of qu's (looking to replace a honda accord)

Do the rear seats fold flat?

And do they all have that "wood"?? If so, is it replaceable??!
That makes two of us - although sadly funds only allow for the GS300.
One thing to note, which tvrgit can confirm, is the CVT of the hybrid provides a very weird sensation when accelerating.
Where you're used to rising and falling of revs with each gearchange, this thing just hums while the scenery gets ever more blurry.
It's so linear, it's unnerving and quite deceptive if you're used to gauging speed from auditory clues of what the engine is doing.

Would the LS600h not be more of a 7/S competitor, the GS is in the same segment as the 5/E is it not?
Yes and no.
List price the GS is 5er territory, but the new GS coming in June (already in the US) has a lot of 7'esque features inside.
The LS is more S class than 7er - but at ~£100K for the only model available (LS600h) you're bypassing a lot of the 7er market.
It's not a driver's car - much like the S class, it's to be driven in, hence the toys in the rear armrest to keep you amused/informed.

Yep that's true - I like the description of "hums while the scenery gets ever more blurry". Overtaking is a breeze - press the go pedal and you're off.

I thought of another possible downside, that's "creeping death syndrome" - you have to be very careful in multi-storey car parks especially at the end of a journey, or if it hasn't been parked for long - when the engine is warm but speeds are low, it will put the engine off and use only the electric motor so it moves away silently, so you have to really watch pedestrians who aren't looking at you, because they probably won't hear you either.

I had aplay with one back when I had a mapped 535d and can confirm the Lexus is pretty swift! If anything it was slightly pulling away from me on a roll.

Personally I find them a little too bland to look at although I acknowlegde the technology underneath.

Theres a new one out anytime I think which looks 100% better imo.

One possible downside - George Galloway has one. Or did two years ago when I spotted him driving it in south London. Respect?

Depreciation could be an issue, I rarely keep a car for more than 2 years. I would suspect I would put on 24-30k miles in that time. I think with any 'large non german barge' this would be an issue.... C6 for example?

After owning 3 Lexus's I thought the same and I said I will stay away from quirky brands so I don't loose money in the future . My current car was cheapest in the country, it is German , it's an estate ,it's diesel and it still l lost 4k in two years and 40k . Moral of the story is , all cars depreciate and from personal experience I can tell you Im more comfortable in buying a 8 yr old Lexus than an 8yr old anything else

Legacy 2.0d

Then I noticed the Citroen C6 (30-35mpg and loaded with toys) and have recently stumbled on the Lexus GS450h.

Am I mad for even considering it?! Is it opening a whole can of hurt?
With a totally sensible head on the Legacy gets my vote, BUT for a bit madness & left field joy (really it's two fingers to popular opinion) the C6 wins hands down - it really looks fab too. Having said all that I'd buy the GS.

Johnboy, I am in total agreement. My head (and brother/friends who know these things) says Legacy, heart says C6 but the autistic nerd in me says GS......

Now, anybody want to buy a 120k V70 D5?!

This ^

In terms of not being a 'drivers car', the LS's are actually very surprising. It is more a factor of their historical target audience being older and more 'mature' and so not given to bouts of pressing on at 8/10th's :-)

I have had the chance, on the very very few instances where the kids and wife are not in the car, to take mine down some country roads and it is quite comical how good they are.

That being said, this is coming from a person who thinks that a Maybach 62 is an aspirational used car purchase and ideal as a family hack in a few years and will make an interesting member of a Breakfast Run from Guildford to Goodwood

So I went to my local dealer to look at a GS, a 300 SE-L. Living in the sticks has some disadvantages, the lack of used cars a major one! I liked it, the interior is ok, the dash isn't too plasticky,a concern before. The leather is lovely, better than my Volvo and Audi. A couple of niggles, lack of headroom with sunroof and lack of rear leg room, due to having the seat down and back to accommodate my height. I didn't bother to drive it as the 450h is a very different proposition-I need to travel to a region that has a better selection of cars.

Not sure if the driving position with regard seat and height may be a problem.

I am now considering the Audi A8 4.2 tdi, although its quite a bit bigger.
