Boulevard cruisers like this and the SL500 are designed for fat old rich men in their sixties to drive to the golf club in. It's a struggle to make that cool.

"A tiny handful of 6 Series"? Are you blind? They're everywhere.

It's a matter of personal taste I think and my opinion of the car is that it looks ugly, which is one that I think a lot of other people share. If you like it though, get one.

Looks like the SC is going in the 'Room 101' of iffy cars from the last two decades. It'll be in good company alongside the likes of the Ford Scorpio and Nissan Serena.
Err, why? Because a few of us don't like the styling? I suppose going by that logic the Nissan GTR will be making in into Room 101 sooner or later? confused.

I genuinely don't understand PH sometimes. You're quick to slate the car as being rubbish, despite there fundamentally being nothing wrong with it other than Marmite styling. Pound for pound they have held their money just as good as a SL500 of similar age and mileage, and my guess would be cheaper to run too, but yet their crap. But yet the LS430 is a favourite amongst PH barge fans, and yet despite having the same engine and technology as the SC430 and a similar sticker price as new has comparatively dropped like a stone on the second hand market scratchchin

Lots of tin-tops around, not a huge number of cabrios, though.

It's not the only SL competitor though. The XK sits in much the same market, as does the 911 cabrio.

I like 'em.

They have been on my radar as well lately.

Bullett proof reliability and build quality. V8. Hard roof. Cheap and getting cheaper.

The later versions had nicer wheels and look a little more aggressive, and better for it IMO.

And the fact that quite a few people don't "get it" is a plus point in my book. People are like sheep when it comes to cars, usually quoting Top gear when they express their "opinions".

I prefer the road less travelled. The contrarian / awkward old git in me, instinctively feels more attracted to a car if "popular opinion" says it is rubbish.

The Lexus is clearly not a bad car. It is a well engineered Japanese take on a Mercedes SL at a fraction of the price and with much better build quality. It is not rubbish, but misunderstood.

The kind of people who would buy them wouldn't give a toss what Evo magazine thinks of them because the criteria upon which they and the rest of the dab of oppo school of journalism would judge it are irrelevant to their requirements. It's a 206CC for a richer class of housewife.

You could save yourself a lot of money by getting a Kia Magnetis or similar in that case. They are definitely considered st, and you don't see many of them around.

yes At least the 206CC had relatively inoffensive styling though.

It's not rubbish... it's a very well built machine, but it simply can't replace the gap left by the original soarer IMO

Thank christ it doesn't look anything like that.
This is a track car...

can you see the SC430 being used as a drift machine?
Yes.

I'm struggling to find a single redeeming feature in the styling; it's quite amazing but Toyota seem to have made it both ugly and bland at the same time. The front looks like a melted Ford Scorpio, the sides are slabby, and the arse is fat. Even the wheels are hideous.
I agree, hateful looking thing although it still has some kind of appeal about it in the same way that Bristol does.

Purely from an asthetic point of view, the design is pretty poor for a car in the market sector where style really counts.

Blimey, 7k gets you a decent one, i seriously though there were around the 20k mark still.

Any owners care to comment on servicing, MPG and what they are like to live with ?

Slight edit on your quote, but I agree. Find the original concept brief in the archives, and I'd be surprised if the mission statement was a million miles away from this.

Not a rubbish car as it does what is set out to do and sold well in some markets.

Just that in the UK, it's the answer to a question we don't often ask.

I think a lot of it is the wheels. With a decent set of aftermarket alloys I think they could look a lot better!

Being one of performance motorings bottom feeding scavengers, these have been on my radar due to the reasons mentioned, however, they arent all that fast in the scheme of things, are auto only and are usually in some horrible shade of beige/gold.

Apparenlty they dont drive all that well, innofensive and easy are the usual comments, certainly not exciting. The image, what there is of it just whiffs of Golf club, cruises and ralgex, it is the last car you buy before the Honda Jazz arrives.

They are cheap, but not cheap enough to excuse the looks, image and the fact it only piques petrolhead interst due to the number of cylinders and power output, it is a fast Golf Buggy.
