They have their compromises but when you consider the Mk3 provides a very high percentage of the experience of an Elise at a fraction of the cost, they make a lot of sense - imo.
Increase the percentage. Remove the 1ZZ, replace with a 2ZZ, and you'll still have plenty left in your wallet. smile
What a proposition it would have been if Toyota had fit the 2ZZ as a "Sport" model.
Horse for courses. 2ZZ fun on the track. 1ZZ more fun and usable on the road. Lower down is better and keeping the engine in the boiler the whole time on the road gets old fast!

I have to say I'm quite intrigued by these 1.8 20V VAG engine swaps...

I need to find a base car first though I guess biglaugh

I ended up selling my Saab after it developed a few issues that weren't cost effective for me to sort out - the new owner was in a better position from an equipment and skills point of view and promptly sent me photos of everything he'd fixed himself, then the bottom end went... I think he's still quids in though.

This meant I needed another car and after a bit of searching (and being tempted by a couple of 2ZZ cars) I ended up on a 6 hour round trip to pick up a standard facelift in silver with aircon (but no hardtop) and an array of the factory fit TTE accessories (inc. the weird spoiler that's halfway down the car... it's grown on me). Definitely a bit of a project, lots of niggles to sort, the paintwork is terrible, I suspect it's been in an accident at some point but it was cheap enough and has been fun to drive, I can see the appeal now.

I don't think I'd quite considered how small they are compared to modern traffic though biglaugh

It feels nice to be back in an MR2, the Saab scene was an odd one, the MR2 lot are just like I remember them when I had my MK2 Turbo all those years back and a few of them are still around from then.

It always surprises me how many MR2s you see entered in the Exeter and Torbay Trials.

initially I thought they were an unlikely choice, but they go well.

Not when you appreciate they have the weight exactly where you want it for traction. At the rear over the driven wheels.
Couple that with weight transfer and you're golden. It's why you often see the passenger bouncing up and down in open wheel trials machinery.

Well here’s ours. Put away for the winter and I’ll probably drag it out next year at some point. 2006, six speed, 36k miles.

Just checking out the market as planning on selling my 1997 one with similar mileage soon.

I know prices of good ones are rising but don't see many at this price.

The headline figure doen't mean it will fetch that amount. Some of the asking prices I have seen are simply kite flying. Traders are definitely pitching to collectors with talk of 'a future classic'. Mk1 MR2s may be approaching that status, but Mk2s are not there yet.

That one sold within a week or so. Wonder how close to £20k they got.

Bought this recently.......

Did a fast lap of Scotland in it, which was the sole purpose of the purchase. Liked it much more than I expected, and it was a better car than I initially thought, with history, full MOT and loads of sensible maintenance and mods in evidence ( pre cats removed, new calipers, discs and pads, rear subframe etc ), so spent money on it getting it nice ( new roof, 4 new Toyos, 4 wheel alignment, replica supplying dealer plates and rear window decal, various bits and bobs to tidy it up ). Soon for sale after I get the alloys refurbished, got 5 vehicles already and just don't have room really. Really like the car.

Had this for 8 years. 60k miles, 6 speed box. Not for sale.

if you're selling, then get clear or tint side repeaters, see if you can get hold of the facelift side scoops and rear bumper inserts. For £100 you might raise the value £100, but you raise the attractiveness 5x.

GLWTS - nice car.

Be prepared for a load of timewasters:

“What’s best cash today no messing?”

“How low the price will you accept?”

"Is the car still available?" "Yes".......and then nothing.

"Will you accept (low% of asking price) ?"
