Out & about yesterday (alas not in the Yaris), I looked in my rear view mirror to see a Hilux directly behind me. I then noticed a discreet GR badge on the grill. I thought the owner had just stuck it on for a bit of a giggle. But no, it's the real deal: https://www.topgear.com/car-reviews/toyota/gr-spor...

I had no idea these things existed

Yeah, Toyota have a multi-tiered GR thing going on from actual GR cars such as that Lemans car they ended up pulling the pin on, to the GR Yaris and all the way down to "GR Line" with slightly lowered suspension but mostly stick on tat. GR Prius, GR CHR, GR Hilux. There's even a GR minivan type of thing in Japan too.

Thank you for your knowledge. I suppose it's similar to the Ghia range that Ford used back in the day. I'm surprised that Toyota haven't kept the GR 'brand' for the more performance end of the market, again like Ford did with their RS line.

Over 20 years the Germans have shown us that, provided the real-deal core/halo offering remains on-point, dispersing the performance variant brand across the range (go for it - every 2.0d and mummy cross-over gets a look-on) doesn't diminish it's value.

So, why not a pickup.

I have recently spent a bit of time in the GR Hilux and I have to tell you that capable though it was , the interior frippery simply wasn't for me . Various pieces of " go faster plastic " and the Alcantara ( fake suede ) made me wonder what sort of buyer this is going to appeal to . I have had some experience of the Alcantara on previous Sports cars and I found that when used as a daily driver it can go pretty manky very quickly . With this in mind I went for the Hilux X with black leather in Burnt Orange and when speaking to Salesmen at a couple of Dealerships they shared our opinion , The GR Hilux is crying out for some real Performance upgrade .
