I plan on driving to the alps in Feb and assume I will need Snow chains for my Lexus RX300, there seems to be some confusion on whether you can fit snow chains to the RX and if so what ones. Does anyone have any recommendations? I am based in Berks.

I thought chains were not a requirement if you had 4 wheel drive. Sensible though as road tyres will be limited.

Don't know about special Lexus requirements.

Edit- check this

You are required to have snow chains in France and, I think, Switzerland

Just got back from the alps and I would say you should either get a set of chains (or snow socks, although they are not accepted in France) or winter tyres as it is pretty hairy out there at the moment.

You may never need them but you will be really glad you've got them if it tips down. Try snowchains.co.uk should be able to give you advice on what will fit your car, I found them to be very knowledgable.

+1 for snowchains. Sorted me out very quickly. Winter tyres are a must in the alps at the moment. Best snow for years!!

Long shot, but I have a set of unused chains on classifieds. They will fit

225/60 –16
235/50 – 17
255/40 – 17
245/40 – 18

I am regular visitor to French Alps and would not rely on normal tyres even on a 4x4.

Not sure on tyre / wheel sizes for a RX 300 - but I have a set of these for my Murano. http://www.snowchains.co.uk/main/suv.htm

Ordered from this company online and they arrived in 2 days !smile

I used these people too.

In 7 trips I have never needed to use the chains though came close two years ago. Buying is cost effective if you plan to keep your car for a while or replace it with one with similar tyre size.

My local dry ski centre will let you hire them for £25
