A great run out this morning with my little brother and our matching cars … some great roads across Surrey and Hampshire
Wish my brother would buy something so interesting (I'm the only one of us afflicted by automotive fever) - awesome. vagmag said:
Love this Vagelis, really atmospheric. Although from UK eyes it looks like you are overtaking into a blind bend, so it also causes some anxiety... Took another trip over to Austria last week. Went through Belgium/Luxembourg to avoid most of the tolls (not because I think they're a bad thing, it's just inconvenient to have to get out of the car at every booth when on your tod), stopped overnight both ways somewhere near the French/German border and generally had a lovely time.
The child in me very much enjoyed the turned heads and open mouths (yes, really) as I trundled through Lech
Earlier I'd had to rescue it from this:
All good fun though innit

I wish my dealer hadn't specced Seracs on my Legende - the 'proper' wheels really suit the retro vibe. The child in me very much enjoyed the turned heads and open mouths (yes, really) as I trundled through Lech

How was traction on snow?

Crikey - well done! Do you have to fit/carry snow chains this time of year and what tyres are you running?
He he, thx - being a bit bloody minded about using it, but enjoying every moment. It's on Vredestein Wintrac Pro here, although to get out of the space required both shovel and some cheap folding recovery tracks I'm very glad I threw in!I wasn't aware of any legal imperative to fit or carry chains, only the fitment of winter tyres - at least until I walked to the top of town after a day of continuous snow and read this sign:
I think that says "fit chains unless you're a sub 3500kg AWD car on winter tyres". It's not the steepest of passes and I do think the Alp would've been fine on the packed snow surface, but I might hazard a guess that if you got stuck while failing some of those requirements you could be liable for some recovery costs. As it panned out I opted for an extra day's skiing and by the time I left the road was cleared completely and the sign had changed.
I'll still pick up a set of super low profile chains for future use, having seen that sign.

I picked these up as a second set for the winter tyres; they're trickier to clean than you might imagine! Great for hiding the frequently filthy (yellow) calipers throughout the grottier months though. How was traction on snow?
Traction was fine on the compacted snow surface (as noted, needed recovery tracks to get out of the space though). It's not at all scientific but I reckon full winters buy you about ~0.4g brake/accel/lateral on compacted snow, vs (probably) ~0.2g with summer tyres on the same surface. If you drive 'normally' that's pretty much enough to cover a majority of scenarios without losing grip. And if you don't it's about the perfect amount of grip to have some fun with.

I wonder if snow-socks would be appropriate? I used to have a set of them in my MX5 boot just in case (Had to use them twice but had to replace them after each use as they're essentially disposable items)
I imagine they might do the trick - I hadn't realised they were kind of disposable though?!Gassing Station | Alpine | Top of Page | What's New | My Stuff
