I'm actually interested in brake pedal feel on each setup. I love the feel of the big brakes under moderate to hard braking, but at low speed I find I have to be very gentle or they're quite firm and jerkk. It's easy to get used to after while but coming out of my weekday car they can catch me off guard.
I have the 17” standard wheels and smaller brake discs on my ‘23 A110, albeit with Life110 braided brake hoses. They have lots of feel, and certainly don’t grab. If anything I have to get used to using more pressure, even for gentle/moderate braking, compared to our daily run-of-the-mill Seat.

Are the slave cylinders the same size? If the one on the smaller disk is bigger then the braking force could similar or even greater. It then only comes down to fade resistance - and the smaller disc is probably better matched to the front disc which will take a greater proportion of the braking force.
I've had a look and all the brake system parts (servo/booster, master cylinder, 'pump-vac' booster, lines, hoses and ABS unit) are the same on small vs big brake car, except of course for the hub carriers and the discs.

I'm pretty sure when I do try this I'll just go whole hog and do front and rear as it's the only really fair test. It's not a super expensive experiment as I already have the wheels and there are used sets of smaller brake setups around, as a few people upgrade to bigger brakes and have them spare.

Hi 7en,

Did you manage to get any advice from David Pook / Life110 regarding using the 17" OEM wheels with the larger brakes or with other 17" options?

David did mention previously that he's aware of several people who use 17" wheels on track days etc but hasn't recommended any brands. If the interest is genuinely there I guess he'd make something happen... Given the lightweight ethos, relatively soft nature of the car and maturity of many of it's owners, you'd think there would be a market for lighter 17" wheels with higher profile tyres. I think perhaps most just prefer the look of 18" wheels?

There was the YT video by our Italian friend who found the 17" Braid Full Race A fit over the large brakes, which are heavier than OEM 17" wheels and I think not much lighter than Fuchs, if at all. Another French friend fitted some 17" Protracks and swears by them for road use.

After 1000 miles I'll make the swap to the Pure 17" wheels/296mm brakes for the following 1000 miles, driving primarily on the same roads. I'm not expecting much and 50/50 over what I'd prefer to settle on, so don't think I'll have much placebo. As far as pure aesthetics I think the 320mm discs and Fuchs are matchless and they're more engineered for the car, with the discs being bespoke and the original hubs having to be shaved down to fit the 296mm discs. However I do also have a soft spot for the the A110 on the 17" Pure wheels, as it looks cuter, friendlier and dare I say it cheaper, which I actually like. I'm planning on keeping both set ups regardless and will probably settle on 17" for road use and stick some Cup 2 tyres on the Fuchs for track.

Thanks 7en.
Looking forward to reading your thoughts and conclusions when you're testing out the 17" OEMs. I agree with you; I would have thought there would be a market for sporty 17" wheels, and I also think the 17" OEMs make the Alpine look cuter - as well as 10 KG+ lighter! What's not to like?

Anyone running any flowformed Bola wheels, FLY or FLE or B2R?

I'm thinking bronze FLY 18" would fit on thunder grey quite well.

They will look great.

Or if you REALLY want to go unique, I think these would look great:

If I could just jump in here? I am after a set of 17" wheels to improve the ride of my 2020 Legende, so if anyone has a set surplus to requirements, pleasePM me. Many thanks, back on topic................

I believe the Legende came as standard with the 320mm brakes, I'm not sure if you've read through the previous posts in detail but to fit the 17" Alpine Pure wheels you would also need to change to the standard 296mm discs and hub carriers, at least on the rear as the wheels don't fit over the rear calipers with 320mm discs. You can however find aftermarket 17" wheels which do fit.

Whether 17" wheels are actually worth changing to for the sole purpose of improved ride is another question. I test drove a Pure on 17"s, a Premiere Edition with and without Life 100 springs, then finally a GT. Within a short distance the Pure on 17" wheels felt softer than the Premiere on Life100 springs driven back to back, but as you would expect the difference was less so with the standard suspension cars. I'm currently in the process of a longer term test...

Clearly biased but the Seracs in a lite gold fleck do look stunning in the cold light of day. I probably wouldn't opt for them in their standard colour scheme.

If I can't find 17" alternatives which I like (and which fit), then I'll stick with the Seracs and eventually fit the larger size tyres as fitted optionally on the S i.e. 215F / 245R. The sidewall is very slightly higher than the standard 18" 205F / 235R Michelins.

Are these OE or have you had them refurbished in that colour?

Thank you 7en, I was unaware I might already have the big brakes, I will get it in the air and have a couple of wheels off and look, before doing anything else.

It's easy kitcat - If you have the Alpine branding on the hub of the brake discs, which you can see through the wheel, you have the 320mm/large brakes.

Hi Neil - what spec did you go for, please? I notice the 18x9 comes in ET35 and ET50? Thanks. James.

The 2020 brochure shows 296mm discs as standard on Pure and Legende models; 320mm on the S only.

^ Yes I was surprised to see a '19 Legende with the 296mm brakes recently.

I'd like to add a point that is very often overlooked when talking about unsprung weight of rims... the actual weight of a certain tyre.

At example for my Lotus Elise S1 the Yokohama AD08RS weighs front 1 kg and rear 1.5 kg less than the Nankang NS-2R in exaxtly the same size.
