On top of the French tax system, there's the engineering philosophy that lies at the core of the Alpine idea and which drives their development, best summed up by Colin Chapman as 'adding lightness' and who proceeded to prove that point in F1 (in parallel with Alpine founder Jean Redele who focused on rallying).

While the rest add power, adding lightness is technically far more challenging and inevitably more expensive due to ever more exotic materials being needed. But it's the USP of the Alpine brand. Andrew English's recent and comprehensive review of the A110R in the Telegraph (he reviewed Alpine A110s from launch ie. Pure, and then the S) was met with similar responses about more power, larger engines etc., one of which he rather deftly responded:

Bob Bobson
£60 - £100k; you think they'd have fitted a decent engine for that price, and not a 1.8 4-cylinder.

Andrew English
Dear Mr Bobson, there's not much wrong with the engine that's in it, but yes, Alpine could have added more cubes, but that's not its way.
All the best,
Andrew

Andrew English can also be found writing car reviews at the always excellent The Intercooler, including for the Alpine A110R

why is the shared engine a bad thing?
i'm going to use mine on track days and high days.
If the engine breaks for whatever reason, other than gasket failures and other minor repairs, it would be much more economical to get a new one given it is shared across the renault range. ditto the gearbox.

try that in a porsche GT car.

I just received an invitation from Alpine Cars to attend the "R Night" in London Docklands at 9pm on 16th Feb.

Not much detail in the invite.

Does anyone else have more information?

Is that just for anyone that has an 'R' order in?

Maybe answering my own question but the timing seems to tie in with the launch of the 2023 F1 car. I have asked Alpine for more information.

I am booked to attend but now the day has arrived, a 9pm start and a 1am finish all seems a bit less appealing!

Agreed + if it is let us in at 9pm it probably won't start until 10 or later!

That reminded me that while back when I saw an official Alpine video showing A110R I was wondering what is the expected target group for A110R. Based on the video it seemed like perhaps they are targeting 20 something social media influencers or something like that? Is that really a target group that is actually interested in a car like A110R?

The video which I'm referring to is this:

for a car that supposedly has only 20 cars coming in 2023/24 and told i couldn't bring a +1, it was a bit too crowded and worse of all, i didn't get to sit in the car/poke around the interior or exterior.....

bit disappointing for a car guy but i'm sure everyone else enjoyed themselves

Alpine is currently a niche brand for car nerds, so I can understand why Renault wants to expand the brand appeal as the current one is not a commercial winner, but trendy young people, who go to bed later than 10, who listen to EDM, are not typical sports car buyer, so I don't understand the marketing strategy. Maybe it's aspirational; people want to be associated with being trendy but are still tucked up in bed before 10.

No, they’re targeting us, the older demographic who’d like to think we’re cool and could hang with the kids.

Certainly wouldn’t sell many if they filmed the likes of me struggling to get out of the thing due to dodgy knees. smile

must be thinking long term and brand awareness.

for the 20 people and 2 Alonso edition buyers, we are already committed. This is for the new gen. next time I'll know and ask if its held at a race circuit or a rave warehouse.

loving the size and shape of the A110 everyday.

Prompted by the comments above, what is the age profile of those of us who have an A110 or have ordered an R.

I will start the ball rolling with 62 and I didn't end up going last night. I was in bed soon after 9:00pm smile
