The Spires chap must have seen more R's than anyone else in the UK as it seems we have all gone there!

I haven't driven an R, but if I were you I'd freshen things up with some Life110 mods then wait another couple of years for the R to come down in price and then go for it if you still feel you want one.
I think the main difference is the R, while it’s brilliant, is not radically different from the regular models in as much as say a 911 GT3 is, I own a 911 GT3 and that car is worth all its money because of the engine, whatever you did to a regular 911 you would have to spend a ridiculous amount to get ‘that engine’ with the R having the ‘same’ engine, it’s not difficult to replicate the car,yes I know it will be a modified standard car compared to a genuine R, it will also owe me a lot less money.
If only the regular car wasn’t so good…..

Another vote for the R in black.

I'm all for the functional benefit of carbon fibre but the contrasting body panels don't do it for me.

Money no object I'd pull a Life110 but have a black track R.

Has anyone driven an R and a regular car on AST coilovers? Be interested in the comparison.

I have a black car on order, the colour looking great is not helping my decisions 😂

It will never be an R though and I doubt those carbon parts will be released. Even if they did get released they would be eye watering to buy.

I think black is the most under-rated (un-specced) colour, what wheels and colour calipers have you gone for?

You are correct in that you can always mod to make an R. I did consider getting an aerokit equipped S and to make it an R (including more aero, carbon wheels, seats that are compliant from factory etc would cost you more and have a warranty/insurance nightmare plus be a lot more common.

the thing about the aero is that the downforce doesn't come at the expense of drag coefficency. for a light car the aerokit S and R generate significant downforce without actually generating drag which involves a lot of wind tunnel testing and design. It's more than just carbon fibre and slapping on parts.
The non special engine to me is actually ok. I don't need to worry about replacing it with a new engine..... downside of a non exotic is upside on replacement costs. But that also applies to all alpine A110s.

However, there is no doubt when considering it all, the best version of the alpine is the base version.
Porsche do a much better job of justifying the GT models prolly because alpine's strength is in their home market where the emissions tax is ridiculous. I think it would have cost them less to homologate a higher HP engine than to do all that they have. But it would have ruined their home market so it was likely a calculated decision imagine a 400hp R on a heavily boosted megane engine....

There's really nothing to prevent the exercise of doing it outside of warranty and remember the cost of the entire drivetrain (including new gearbox) is likely less than a rebuild cost of the Gt3 engine

Totally agree with all the above, a new 996 gt3 engine from Porsche is north of 50k now, get a lot of A110 for that

There are a lot of Porsche ‘tuners’ out there where you can take an old 996 and 50k plus, where they will refresh the car and make it ‘as quick as a GT3’ it won’t be as fast , whatever they say and it won’t ever be a GT3 which is pretty depreciation proof unlike the 911 you have just spent 60k on,
However I’m sure I could make my A110 quicker than an R for much less without needing all the carbon bits

One can't help but think of Pikes Peak potential for a Grand Finale ICE A110. While they could simply engineer the current engine and gearbox for more power, I'd love to see Alpine take the power:weight ethos to a further extreme.

True that but I want and have an R

I don’t want a modded A110 same as when I had my gt3rs…… a modded gt3 just won’t do.

It'll probably sell to either someone who doesn't have that good an eye for colour or to someone like me who knows it's been repaired and just doesn't care if it looks good enough.
