There seems to be some problems with OE fuel pumps packing up, which can strand the car anywhere, anytime. This is a bit like Russian roulette!

On rally cars of old they used to fit a 2nd fuel pump alongside the first, so that if one went down, it was a simple matter to switch over to the spare. It struck me that the very same thing could be done with our cars? I don't even know where the pump is, probably in the tank, but I wonder how difficult it would be to rig such a system in the Alpine?

Here is a link to a reasonably priced aftermarket, external pump, which might be usable for such a use.

Does anyone have any thoughts on this idea?

Paul.

If the fuel pump is in the tank I can’t see how it could be bypassed by a second pump (which would be in series with it), so presumably would not be able to push fuel through a stuck/failed pump?

Even if that isn’t the case it’s really not a great way to go about things. Having a reliable component is the only way, otherwise what else do we double up on?

So, terrible idea I’d imagine. wink

Very poor on such an expensive car. Makers should have every car in and replace the rubbish pump as a recall.

MP-R in France sell Walbro replacements with little custom bits for fitment. given they mod the serious track cars for heat and handling I think that says it all, really.
It is silly in 2023 to be fretting about a fuel pump if you are not doing flex fuel tuner cars.

Alpine has a recall on certain production years. My car has had fuel pump replaced under recall at its first service.

But they've had a number of different iterations of the pump (last was in October/November last year I believe), so if yours is older than that...

it isn't a whole year
most of the australian fleet were all produced at the same time and there were 25 replacements out of maybe 90 cars, some of which were recalls and some were failures.
