the voltage sag when starting turned out to be my own problem: a bolt on the live terminal was not tight and during starting the metal there would get really hot and resistance rose causing a voltage sag.
Since discovering this and securing it properly have not had an issue. Car can sit without trickle charger for weeks and capacity of battery is still 75% and it starts fast and reliably now.
