Not quite, although your '3 points' will not count in any subsequent totting up should a further driving offence occur after 3 years, insurance companies however require a declaration based on 'the last 5 years'.
Whether this practice is justifiable or fair is a whole new conversation but be aware that any online application that requires you to enter your driving license number will check automatically with DVLA.
To check for yourself you will also need your NI number.......

Thanks Dezzer - I never enter my driving license number for this exact reason... the "it could save you money" feels like a trap (albeit I suppose if you actually do have a clean license and say so, it may help? Clearly a detractor otherwise).
