A have just had a call from my friend who has an Alpine 110S. He has broken down in a precarious position and can't get neutral. Any tips on how to engage neutral so that he can move the car until the recovery truck come?

Eh? The Alpine doesn't have a gear lever?

Other than pressing the N(eutral) button I'm not sure there is a lot you can do.

My google may have failed him. Suspect that’s not for the alpine, sorry if the case.

Has he tried pulling both paddle shifts at the same time? On Porsche it dumps gearbox into neutral.

Top paragraph in the middle seems to be the method required.

Thank you. He is away back down the hill to see if the previous suggestions work. RAC have also called back but aren't inspiring confidence!

Sorry to hear that!
As far as I can see from the handbook, he should do the following:

With the engine off, doors closed and gearbox in P:

1) TURN ON THE IGNITION
2) SHORT PRESS ON N WHILE SIMULTANEOUSLY PRESSING THE BRAKE PEDAL.
3) IT WILL STAY IN NEUTRAL UNTIL DOOR IS OPENED

Handbrake can be switched off in the usual way while pressing brake pedal.

Remember the breakdown truck should be a FLATBED, apparently!

This should work OK - hope it helps!
Best of luck.

Good news, that has allowed him to select neutral and he has been able to move the car to a safe position while he awaits the RAC.
Thank you again everyone for the prompt responses.

Doors closed is the big thing! It's usually likely doors are open when you're broken down... confused

Hope the recovery and repair goes well.

I believe later cars revert to P once the door is opened, as described here.

This possibly came in on 22MY - my 21MY can be left in N even after I've got out. I guess this means the car wants somebody to stay in it while being winched onto a flatbed.

Glad OP's friend is sorted.

as someone who has experienced this, I really recommend all owners practice how to..

a) turn off the car without it engaging park brake
b) force select neutral
c) turn on the ignition without it auto-selecting P or park brake

and do it with or without the drivers door closed/open so you can remember how this blocks certain things.

Even sitting here I can't quite remember and it really would help to print out whatever unusual mode selects from the manual on one card for when your car has broken down from a fuel pump issue..
Because basically there might come a time when you have cannot start the car for whatever reason but still have 12v power and need to MOVE it with the help of someone. You don't want to be struggling with it in gear, or on park brake, or with a steering lock in that situation. Panic means apparently simple things become forgotten like "door closed" or "foot on brake while..."

There's also the "turn the ignition off" because that is opening and shutting the door - but you might not want to sit waiting for a flatbed with the ignition on slowly killing the battery.

Would be much simpler if the cars had a normal ignition key and a clutch biggrin

Good luck getting it sorted. You may also want to consider submitting a safety concern report to DVSA: https://www.gov.uk/vehicle-recalls-and-faults/repo...

The more of us that do it, the more likely it is pressure will be put on Alpine to perform a recall.

/edit to add - please also update the google sheet where we're tracking known fails: https://docs.google.com/spreadsheets/d/1yh3tTKBsh6...
