If you have to keep doing that, doesn't that mean you are not 100% convinced by the idea?
That's exactly what it means... But I've been mulling this over long before I started this post and I'm still no clearer. I'm quite image conscious whether that's morally right or wrong. I know the sandero is the ideal choice, brand new, warranty, quick enough... Can't help but think of a more flashy or fun used alternative though.

Head vs heart and what I want and what I actually need

I've been image conscious in the past and bought the flashiest car I could get for my money, and it was more trouble then it was worth at the time because money was tight - okay money isn't tight in your case but you would like to save as much as possible. It seems you have new priorities to save money, and hell you're in the fortunate position of having another car for the weekends - it's a work and back motor. Let's face it 6k can't exacrly buy the nicest flash car, although it could get you say a 11-12 y/o 5 series with a big petrol engine, which will at some point need an expensive service, expensive tyres and possibly an expensive repair. You'll look like you've got more cash than a sandero driver, but who cares about that, really? Those that matter would know why you've got the sandero and also know it's not your only car.

All true, but weren't you the chap who recommended I get something used for about 5k and have a just incase fund earlier in the thread? Sounds like you're having as hard a time thinking about this as I am ha! It's a hard thing to make a call on.

I think you should just do it. You understand both sides of the argument. It depends on luck. You could buy a secondhand car and it performs faultlessly for the duration. That means it was the right decision. Or it could be a nail and the opposite would be true.
The Dacia could deliver all the benefits you hope for or it could spend had the time in the service bay and be worth 2 bob when you come to sell.
Only time will tell - good luck.

I never see too many poverty spec Dacias about though - most are mid range with alloys and i'd say a decent percentage of those are diesels.

If you're into nigh on £10K for a Dacia would you not be better off with a year old i30 Hyundai with the remainder of a 7 year warranty?

That's true on both counts - only with the dacia I wouldn't have to pay when it's in the service bay.

Again, I supoose I'm answering my own questions here. As you say though it's always down to luck really, so maybe I'm better off going for the best odds

For me, the 10k one probably defeats the point. At that you'd get not just a Hyundai but probably a fiesta!

I'm keen to go for the one that's roughly 6.5k, so basic 1.2 engine but with e/ windows, locking, cd,Bluetooth and aux, body coded bumpers etc. if not then the same spec but with the 0.9tc3 engine, around 7.5k. It's hard to beat these for the money but I will look into the used hyundais, kias and toyotas with the good warranty for sure

Not sure if you have read the autotrader customer reviews on the Logan but may give you some inspiration you are looking for from owners that have bought them for reasons such as yours.

Only 6 reviews but scores 4.9 for the logan model

This comment STILL has me puzzled...... are the servicing costs free or not? for the first 5 years. If they're free then I'm rushing out to place my order!

No, servicing isnt free, however like most new cars now, you can buy a servicing plan to cover the cost.

With Dacia its £389 for the first three years.

Perhaps Its right to assume that the person who mentioned it could spend half the time in the servicing bay was talking about for repairs not an actual service, in which case it wouldn't cost anything due to warranty

I've just had a look at second hand ones on Autotrader, they appear to be holding onto their value which would go against the comments of 'being worth 2p' and such like. There's other information on the 'net which which would also suggest good used values.
I do have to admit that the bomb basic ones appeal to me, I've ran povo spec cars before and coped fine. I'm curious as to whether 2.0 Clio bits and bobs fit....

Yes I meant repair rather than scheduled service.

Like the Berlingo I suspect those that buy them are canny and tend to hold onto them so lack of supply keeps used values up.

I just had a quick look on auto trader and there was a year old example with 7,000 miles, for the same price as you can get a brand new one! I suppose they're hoping people just don't realise! Well, the brand new one would have to be white, and this had the optional 495 quid metallic paint but even so...

For this scenario I'd look at a Hyundai i10, fab little cars and you get all the bits like air conditioning included, along with a 5 year warranty.

OH has a 14 plate 1.0, and I've used it to do Warrington to Swindon a few times, it copes really well on the motorway.

The wife has a skoda citigo courtesy car at the moment, which I had the pleasure of driving yesterday on the m40. For a 1.0 it's fantastic. The 3 cyl engine is very quiet and refined, and it was sitting at around 3000rpm at 70 so perfect - and had plenty of go to speed up and overtake. It sat comfortably at motorway speed and cabin noise was minimal really. I guess the wheels being so far in each corner makes it stable and I forgot I was in a tiny city car.

You could get a used one of these in a decent trim for the same sort of money probably under warranty - might be worth looking at if you don't mind something smaller, obviously passenger and luggage space is limited, but overall I found it a cracking car for the money. Averaged 63mpg over 200 miles since she's had it and I believe tax is free too.

Decent thread resurrection...

Took a Sandero Stepway for a spin on Saturday, while it was not a ball of fire, it was no slow coach. Decent around town, and got up to A road speeds without too much stress while 4 up.

I was respectably impressed by it, and was wondering how others are finding longish term ownership? - an upgrade to the 7 year warranty would be good with the thought of the Ford Fox engine and its "longevity"

Is it as good as it looks.
I configured one and it came to under 16000€,for a new car that’s impressive.

From what I read in AutoExpress it offers far more than anything else at the price (in the UK at least). Not as quiet and refined as the Clio (which uses the same platform) but a decent performer nevertheless.
