Nothing like a bit of spin (and a price rise) to gloss over an EU ruling that says these have to be standard now wink
Just because they're now standard doesn't mean it doesn't cost the manufacturer something to add them to a vehicle that previously didn't have them! OK, possibly not £500, but leaving aside the usual facile used car vs new car comparisons, it's still an affordable car, isn't it? Not sure £500 to the list price will make much difference either way, how many will they actually sell at full list price anyway?

None at all according to the dealer I spoke with.

And, a very low p/x figure if you are trading something in - again this was from the salesman at my local dealership.

Blimey! 2014 and I was talking about Dusters.

How time flies. I didn't buy until 2021 when my BMW was ULEZed, but only £10500 new.

2 years later and I think the 1.0 3cyl basic car is £15k now. According to WBAC mine is still worth what I paid for it 2 years and 14k miles ago.

Brilliant car, really can't fault it and I still find it fun to drive.

I do keep thinking of chopping it in for a fast saloon, say an Alfa Veloce, but when/where can I use the performance. It would only frustrate.

I thought the little Dacia would slow me down but I still appear to be the quickest in London traffic where it spends 80 percent of its time.

It goes on hikes with me so no worries about it getting muddy inside and out and even handles a little off roading but can sit at 80 all day on the motorway. Very decent MPG as well.

2014! can't believe it was 9 years ago.

That's what they start at now unfortunately.

But all cars have leapt up in price.

Seems only 2 years ago I was considering a new Alfa Guilia Veloce at £35k, they are almost £50k now. Crazy money especially as I'm on the same income that I was on when I bought a new Mustang in 2016 for £33k.

£50k plus now.

You are right, I'd never have considered one at £15k (a Duster).

I think I'm with you on this, £15k is plenty but have you seen what cars cost in 2023?

I paid £18k for mine, no regrets at all. If I keep it for 10 years as a one owner, top spec and well cared for car at 80k it might be worth £4k (maybe more in inflation adjusted terms).

I think you can pay £23k now for a diesel 4x4 with the DCT.

It's interesting reading back to 2014, feels like yesterday but really is nearly 10 years ago. Those 2014 cars are worth atleast £3k now in average condition.

I doubt the new one will start at anything less than 16 or 17k.

What other new car can you buy for £15k that provides better value?

Currently looking at a Sandero Stepway, which now starts at £14,395 and £14,895 for the LPG. Was reading a few reviews from 2021 where the base car was £10,995, so quite a rise, but then as others have said, compared to the rest of the market, still good value. Looking at SH prices, even 2021 models with circa 30k miles are around £12k!

Alternative option is a Panda 4x4, 2019 for £12k and 30,000 miles. Appreciate the Stepway doesn't have 4x4 mind.

Check the specification levels carefully, I think you might be surprised how light on equipment the Stepway Essential is.

Manual door mirrors
Manual rear windows (drivers is not even one touch)
No parking sensors
No radio screen or buttons so the passenger cannot operate the radio. You have to install an app on your phone and place this in the holder in the dash.
2 speakers for the radio
Everything inside is hard plastic, there is no cloth on the door cards and no chrome anywhere
Black plastic door mirrors and handles
No fog lights

It really is as basic as it can get, there isn't even vanity mirrors on the visors and the steering wheel is just plastic.

Any colour other than white is another £650, and a spare wheel is £300.

Before you know it, the car will be £15,345
