Deliberately mismatched downshift to break traction on such as rwd Escorts was always referenced when I was competing as "diff braking", with the caveat that if employed on tarmac then the spelling would change to "diff breaking."
Too brutal for me.
Also a technique used in drifting to break traction and get the car sideways. Must have done this thousands of times in E36 BMWs and never broke a diff with this particular technique.Too brutal for me.

Bearing in mind there are other means of breaking rear traction for the purposes of getting a competition car sideways this is still imo a very mechanically unsympathetic technique. Clearly you appear to differ from that opinion. :shrugs: Whatever.
I will stick my head out and say that the instructors used there back then would've had a minimum of experience. Don't be fooled that being an instructor at a rally school means that they're any good. I've seen loads that don't know what they're doing - apart from earning a small amount of money sitting with the public, they wouldn't be able to actually tell you what to do, just where to go on the stage.
