These new cars are spaceframed around a safety cell, so the front and rear panels are not as strong as previous WRC cars (which were production bodyshells). I think visually it might look worse than it is - if the safety cell is OK, he can rejoin in the morning with repairs.

Yes, people will have to get used to accidents that look worse than they actually are......as parts will fly off. Saying that, the rear of his car looks properly wrecked....
I'm not entirely convinced by the move to space frame chassis....

Another clip after - feel sorry for the lad.

From somewhere else:

"M-Sport's Richard Millener said the car is heavily damaged and Fourmaux's rally is most likely over."

I'm surprised by Hyundai's apparent lack of pace. It'd be good to see Neuville and Tanak in the fight too this season. Hopefully just event specific.

The cages look hugely strong, but as I said earlier in this thread, I’m still not convinced by
the concept.
There’s a lot to be said for a steel monocoque which remains intact and absorbs and dissipates energy during a crash, whilst the cage provides the critical protection for the occupants.

One can’t help but notice Seb Loeb’s current navigator is considerably more petite and lighter than Dan Elena was in the twilight of his career, does that explain his amazing pace in the Puma when compared to his last comeback with Hyundai scratchchin
hehe

Great times from Evans and Loeb, great to see the Ford's are back in it! Loeb has quite a full season ahead I believe so I don't think he would be up for a full championship.

Disappointing from Fourmaux, it's all very good being quick for a stage or two but bring the car home, don't write the thing off! Especially when you need seat time

The safety cell looks to have stood up reasonably well. But compare the damage to Fourmaux’s car and Tanak’s car in what was a higher speed shunt on the 2020 Monte.

I’d rather have a traditional steel monocoque AND a well designed cage around me, than a tubular safety cell/chassis. This feels a bit too much like a return to Group B, and the reduction in suspension travel (though clearly not a factor in this accident) seems a genuine retrograde and I’ll/conceived concept.

I’m not huge Malcolm W fan, but two cars completely trashed in the space of two weeks must be financially ruinous, and massively increases the workload for the engineering/fabrication departments at MSport.

Edit to add :
Fourmaux was very lucky, whilst the drop the other side of the barrier the car cleared was significant, it could have been a “needed a parachute/clothes out of fashion by the time you hit bottom” job. yikes

Never been convinced by Fourmaux that he can compete quickly without crashing. Belgium, Monza and now Monte from my recent memory, didn't he also bin it at the Goodwood Festival of Speed? I can't see his contract lasting very long if he keeps bending his ride.

Glad to see Evans in the mix. It doesn't look great for the series if the two part-timers (albeit who have one every championship bar one since 2004 between them) take a 1-2 on the opening event of the year! hehe

It's a carbon copy of the Cyclocross season.....part time CX (and former CX World Champion) rider comes in and wins all but one race, and that was due to a mechanical....

He did a good job of playing down his chances/the car's potential when interviewed by the Dirtfish team before the recce yesterday morning ...

and the more I see/hear of Greensmith, the less impressed I am ...
Credit where credit is due. Greensmith fastest through SS7. Very impressive to beat Seb Loeb’s time in the same car (though Loeb lost 2.7 seconds due to a lack of hybrid power)

Bring back Group B with 20 minute gaps and half the field in retirement! wink

This is brilliant! And bloody close.

The outer damage on the newer cars doesn't really matter. It looks a lot more severe, but in reality the panels are doing next to nothing so there isn't much to be read into them being destroyed. The important bits have done their jobs which is all that matters really.

Seems to be the only one able to live with the old guard at the moment
