First WRC Ypres for me.....done most from around 1999 apart from the obvious years.
Not sure if I'll enjoy it TBH, double the prices and expecting to be squeezed into areas to spectate.
Grote Market is now a no go zone to spectators, the whole area now is just the 3 main manufacturer cars, no access to see servicing, according to the woman who tried to move us on this morning its due to the hybrid cars having to run electric in service area so are silent and so elf and safety takes over.
Shakedown was similar but not quite so severe but seeing probably less than 25 cars in 2 hrs on a 7.5km stage is piss poor.
For the remainder of entry I reckon less than 50% were there by 8pm.

Ya that's very much not on.
I love the modern cars, the most exciting in years.
But fk me, ya bring in hybrid to make it more "relevant" to road cars, then ban spectators from the very place they could see their heroes up close because the cars are now too silent and could pose a threat??!
What decided that was a good idea?

Most top end motorsport is about one thing, money.
Ypres would have outbid several other places to get this rally I would guess, which probably means millions of Euros.
So they have to make that back somehow, same as any track that hosts f1 or motoGP etc, the crowd at Silverstone Go recently was very low, mainly due to costs and things like 30 quid to park your car.
People vote with their feet in times like this, and events can happily disappear if they try to rip fans off thankfully.
As for the R5 debate, it has been my contention for years that modern WRC is simply irrelevant to anything really, the drivers know the stages like you know your drive to work meaning risk is the only thing that wins, the cars are utterly ridiculous, the rallies are too short and compact to "save costs"
And the fans are treated like second rate people who are a pain in the arse rather than a real factor in the event, their enjoyment is ruined by over policing, endless noise form tv helicopters and lack of real interaction

Ypres has a long, successful history running outside of the WRC. It doesn't need to be in the WRC. This is what happens when it does....costs go up, access gets pulled, etc
It becomes a different event.
its true isnt it, its one of these rallies like donegal or IOM or jim clarke which doesnt need to be on the calender for a world championship. this situation will really rile up the regular attendee. It becomes a different event.

It'd be great if they could leave them as is, just with the top level of cars competing!Great battle up front, Evans dropped back a bit after a time penalty of 10 seconds. Breen and Lappi caught out on the wrong tyres and lost a load of time. M-sport dropping the ball again with this and a fire so Breen basically didn't get any testing done!
Pity Rovanpera is running away with the championship, it would be unreal if we had this close battle for all the rallies and championship!
Disappointed about Breen, putting in a really good stage time and just pushed too far and out he went at the same corner Fourmaux hit the bales. Have watched the replays if the bales were still there it may have saved Breen but that doesn't matter now.
I think he's just pushing himself too far to try and make up for some team issues ATM. No testing for this event and last event in a new car to him isn't good enough really.
Neuville out as well, I had a feeling he was going to bin it. He looked on the ragged edge like Tanak, Tanak seems to have got away with it despite a good few times going into ditches.
All the crashes seem to be the same thing, understeering on the dust into the ditches which do the damage!

Neuville, Breen and Tanak were visibly quicker than the rest on the stages we were on, fine line though from hero to zero....
Not just the dust.....
The road was not far off this after first passage of 100 cars or so, pic is after 2nd passage.
The 911's didn't enjoy it one bit ...
Could almost mistake that for forestry !Not just the dust.....

Another miserable event for M-Sport, with Fourmaux binning it trying to chase down Solberg. Missing pre event tests isn't a great sign for a 'manufacturer' entry, but I think that tells us Ford aren't exactly generous with their $$$$$ backing.
Another fabulous drive from Ott, wrestling the car around; Elfyn with a decent 2nd place, and what might have been after leading on Friday, and a 10 sec penalty yesterday. Lappi in 3rd and a sensible/ steady drive from Oliver in 4th, when others were going off.
