WRC Monte Carlo!

I know it's only the first run at shakedown, but it's pretty impressive from Loeb to be quickest (having just flown in from 2nd on the Dakar).

We’ll find out on his second run through… Loeb continuing to pull away which is amazing really.

Although shakedown really does mean nothing.

He did a good job of playing down his chances/the car's potential when interviewed by the Dirtfish team before the recce yesterday morning ...

and the more I see/hear of Greensmith, the less impressed I am ...

Many thanks for the link, it's really appreciated smile
I have BT Sport solely for the WRC and Moto GP coverage, and The Monte is my favorite event on the WRC calendar.
I put BT Sport on this morning at 8.30 to see their preamble, only to get a message from Sky saying I don't have a subscription to BT Sport furious

The Puma looks stunning, both its overall styling and the graphics.
The new Yaris looks pretty much spot on from the front, but a disaster from the rear.
Whilst the Hyundai looks a dogs dinner from the front and the back ...
A case of if it looks right it probably is ?

Greensmith seemed to have a technical issue part of the way through the first shakedown. He didn't look to be going that well, but towards the end of the run he slowed right down and was on and off the gas, short-shifting up and down the box and wiggling the wheel. The commentators thought it could be a power steering issue. I thought it looked like he lost power or throttle response.

I know it's only a shakedown, but Loeb looked incredible. Back from thr Dakar and then sets the fastest time in shakedown at 47 years old. He truly is the greatest to ever sit behind the wheel.

I see the co-drivers seat appears to be at the same height as the drivers this year.

Considering one of them is 47, hasn't driven WRC competitively for 2 years (OK, granted he has had some outings in between), has just finished the Dakar in 2nd less than a week ago, I would suggest that one is of a gravy type all of his own.

Loeb is just on another level. Great to see him back in a WRC car.

It's the first time I've been this invested in the WRC due to it being the first time an Irishman is getting a full drive, I've never been so stressed watching a stage lol!

Really surprising first two stages IMHO. The time differences are nuts. I didn't expect Loeb to be so close but when you consider he's been competing internationally in the Extreme E and just did Dakar, he's completely match fit for an international event when compared to those around him, in comparison, Breens last rally was Killarney in December in an M3!!

Very surprised to see how off the pace Neuville, Solberg, Rovanpera and Tanak are, however Greensmith and Fourmaux they've been very good so far! I don't know what I want Breen to do, I've like him to be close to the likes of Neuville and Evans, but that was assuming he would be top Ford, which so far he might not be. But then again, it is his first competitive rally in a brand new team for him, brand new car and he hasn't been at the Monte in 4 years so not too bad so far!

And is driving a car that he’s had very little testing time when compared with any of the other drivers in the top ten ...

Fair play to Greensmith, impressive times he set this evening.
All round it’s shaping up to be a cracking event smile

Can't get my head around the large time gaps; the first stage had tricky places, but the second stage was practically dry. You wouldn't expect to see those gaps on a normal Tarmac event; I suspect some drivers are over thinking tyre choices - and those that aren't, are quick; Ogier, Loeb, etc

May also be some drivers struggling to get setups sorted being the first rally with the new cars and hybrid mapping etc.

I'm not so sure that it's unusual,

I looked at some random previous events (2021, 2017, 2012, 2003) and the time difference across the first 6 after two stages was between 30 and 60 seconds each year.

I just think it's something that it's always hard to judge the pace on the first couple of stages (in the dark, tricky changes of local ice patches etc)

Big gaps have always been there in the monte. Rohrl won it by 7 minutes in 83

Loeb takes 1.2 out of Ogier on the first stage of this morning, now only 5.5 off Ogier overall, he's flying isn't he!

Fourmaux didn't finish the stage, don't know why as I'm only looking at splits at work! Breen took 6 seconds out of Greensmith both were a good bit slower than Evans.

SS4 Evans has just gone faster than Ogier! Took 1.3 out of him

Fourmaux rolled on SS3, clipped the inside of a LH bend, which pushed him into the rock face on the outside, bounced back and over the barrier, down a ravine. Crew OK and the hybrid safety system stayed intact.
