2024 WRC and ERC discussion

Another impressive performance for Sesks in Latvia. I thought he might find it harder moving to the full hybrid car, but he adapted well (admittedly helped by road position). Very unfortunate to have a technical issue on the final stage to rob him of a home podium.
And to add insult to injury, he is now missing the ERC round in Italy (I presume due to the car not being ready after Brandon Semenuk rolling it in Latvia)

Semenuk also did Otago this year, running in the classic 4wd class in a leased H6 Impreza.
He rolled that too after getting up to second in class, but I don't think it did any major damage - he drove it out after being put back on the wheels by spectators.

Just watching the ITV highlights of the Finland rally - the presenter interviewing Thierry Neuviller when he finished literally said:
"you have to up your game'
Can you imagine the arrogance to ask him that.
He took it in good spirts, but honestly.

Especially when his main championship concern Elfyn was some 18mins back and the two in front were part time players."you have to up your game'

Neuville has gone about this season extremely well; and has got to grips with the new points system, and how to 'milk' it. He finished 2nd, and took one point less than Ogier, and comfortably outscored Tanak & Evans......"you have to up your game'

I don't think he, or the other full timers expected Ogier to do so many rounds as a 'part timer'; and with the benefit of road order has scored big points - and is now a genuine title threat.
I'm hoping Neuville can actually seal the deal this time; otherwise having a 'part timer' winning the WRC would be pretty damning......

no it wouldn't. All the championships won from 1979 to about 1997 were won by part timers. Also Loeb won it as part timer in 2006.I don't think he, or the other full timers expected Ogier to do so many rounds as a 'part timer'; and with the benefit of road order has scored big points - and is now a genuine title threat.

Equally Ogier and Rovanpera are the class acts in WRC. So however they win it, it would not be pretty damning.
Elfyn Evans remains a bit of a disappointment this season though.

You're talking absolute bks......And Loeb was injured, hardly part time. Equally Ogier and Rovanpera are the class acts in WRC. So however they win it, it would not be pretty damning.
it's not bks.
the wrc from 1979 to 1996, consisted of around 12 events per season, of which the best 7 scores counted for a championship. that meant that all the works drivers did 7 or sometimes 8 rounds. So 3 or 4 rounds were not included in their programmes, normally events like Ivory Coast or New Zealand which were drivers only events.
Consider 1987 for example, where Biasion was barred from competing in the RAC as he'd done his quota, whilst Juha and Markku battled it out in Britain.
So yes they were part time in as much as they didn't do all the rounds, which is the same as Ogier.
And Loeb may have broken a bone, and missed a couple of events, but even he said that was his best championship because he won it whilst sat at home.

also shows how poor the current crop of british and irish drivers are.
A bit harsh on the British and Irish drivers - they were showing good pace against the rest of the ERC field, just lacking a bit of consistency. But Paddon was on an absolute flier, leaving the other ERC contenders behind as well as the locals.I always felt the R-GT category was a real lost opportunity for WRC. Never promoted, never part of the TV packages despite the spectacular nature of the cars, it was basically an unwatered sapling allowed to wither.
I loved watching Delecour hammer that 911 - but had to seek out YouTube to catch any of it. These Alpine R-GTs appear in number in the Monte, not that you'd ever know from the official coverage!
