Hi everyone,I have been building a McLaren m6 gt inspired car for several years now . Well it's all iva,d and registered but I have a problem . It is fitted with a ford 302 engine with radiator at the front with twin fans electronically switched and header tank . My problem is it just gets hotter and hotter even with the fans running full tilt . 1 I am not 100% sure I have the pipework correctly routed ie bleed from rad heater in and out ect ect . Is there any one in the Swindon area with any experience who would be nice enough to come to my workshop and give me a heads up on 302 cooling ?. Many thanks befuddled dean
First obvious question, are the fans wired up correctly and when on flow the air from the outside to the inside. I had a similar problem and the fan was pushing against the natural airflow because it was wired up wrong therefore blocking the radiator not sucking/pushing cold air through it. Sorry an obvious one but thought I would check.
Thankyou ugg but I did check this ,the fans are mounted on the underside of the rad and draw cold air through the front of the car down through the rad under the car . The rad is only a very thin cored rad so I am wondering if I should change to a 50 mm core but it's a big job to change . So I would like to see if I have the coolant system pipework correct first .
I'm no expert but learning as I go. Have you hot a bleed from the top of the rad to the highest point on the system, normally the expansion tank, also does the engine sit level? If not have you drilled and added a connection across the rear of the intake manifold as on the SBF they are not normally joined and it's possible to end up with an air lock there. I also understand that there should be a bleed from the front of the intake to the expansion tank...
As I say no expert and my engine is not even in the car yet!? but just tips I have picked up to avoid the cooling issues I am also likly to face...

Hi hoonigan, I will try to describe my set up . Big pipe on top of waterpump to top of rad then bottom of rad back to big pipe on bottom of pump . Also from the top of the rad there is a small pipe (air bleed ) this goes to top of header tank ,tee,d into this is the pipe which comes from the front of the inlet manifold and finally from the bottom of the header tank goes a pipe to the small outlet on the water pump . What is the small pipe that goes from one side of thermostat housing to the other ?. The rad is single core about 25 mm and is 600 mm ish by 320 mm ish with the tanks on the side not on the top and bottom .
Wouldn't trust a flat mounted radiated with that expected flow. Speaking from experience with a Subaru engined 914 and flat mounted rad - the people who did the conversion were "optomistic" about air flow patterns at the very least and (unsurprisingly) it trashed the first engine through over heating...

A friend on mine has one he started to build- he foolishly took on trying to redesign the rather poor suspension set up that was part beetle, and having cut various chassis bits about it got no further, and has laid in the garage ever since.
