Don't see why you couldn't swap swept wings for cycle wings. You will have holes in the bodywork but that's what stickers are for. All you'll need is a set of brackets and cycle wings. Should cost around £150 for the bits.

Look on the Westfield car club site - www.wscc.co.uk - and register for the bulletin board; there's a section there on cars for sale.

I notice a few of you are interested in Westfields, well I am actually looking to sell my Pre Lit Westfield at the moment which has the following spec.

Westfield SE
1700 Xflow, Stage lll head
KC 234 Cam
Arias Racing Pistons
Twin 40’s, 5-speed
RS2000 Live rear axle
Full Weather equipment
Locking boot box
Full RAC roll bar

The car is currently pushing out 130bhp, and is extremely torqy, ideal for hill climbs and track days!

The block has been built to withstand 200bhp and with the 244 cam it can push out in excess of 140bhp (you do loose torq with this cam though)

The car is absolutely imaculate and has a lot of unique finishing touches, so is a real head turner (finished in Jaguar Signal Red).

I am looking for £7250 for the car, so if you are interested in further information, or to see a picture of the car drop me a line and i'll email the details.

My 2pennorth, FWIW, by the way excellant overview JS!!!
You will need approx 150 bhp in a westy to achieve a 0-60 figure of around 5.5, 120 will take nearer 6.7 I think. My 180 gave 4.6, the V8 is similar. Also insurance qoutes for this type of car, certainlly with the 6 or so Co's i contacted, are based purely on cc and mileage, ie a car with a 2.0ltr pinto engine lifted from a wrecker, producing under 100bhp, will be the same price to insure as a car fitted with a full race VX unit producing 290+ bhp, and thats why its affordable. No no claims is usually given with this type of policy, as it is limited mileage, (1500, 3000 or 5000 mpa). Lastly, and this is purely personal preference, go for the VX engine it is an absolute bute, needs little tuning for road use, and is still available in the right condition if you shop around.Brian.

For info, I've just insured my 145bhp Connaught built 1600 Westie with Adrian Flux for £166 (3000 miles, fully comp) which I was mightily impressed with !

WOW, this thread is brilliant!

This is my first time posting on this site so bear with me!

I bought a 1989 Westfield SE and am currently rebuilding it and making it race worthy (FIA approved stuff) ready for me to start sprinting when I turn 17 in February!

At the moment the engine is tending to 'blow' and backfire, oh I have a 1600 (advertised as a 1700 I'm confused) Ford X-Flow with twin weber 40's!

Any advice warmly welcomed!

Cheers

Graham

Are you planning on running in the WSCC Speed Series then? Have to admit I'm toying with this myself. I'm gonna see how I feel when I get mine back and get it running right again.

I suppose it all depends on whether you're just doing it for fun (as I would be) or you want to be competetive as to how far you go with preparation. All I would say is don't skimp of safety equipment. Get a decent roll bar/cage and harnesses and the like.

Being an SE like mine, check out the trailing arm brackets on the chassis from the axle (I'm really not good with the proper terms for things). One of mine had almost sheered off and another was on it's way. Aparently quite a common problem with tracked live axle cars that run sticky rubber. They may need replacing with some beefier items.

As for advice on your X-Flow troubles hopefully someone who knows more about them will turn up and help you out as I don't know a great deal I'm afraid.

Other than that, make sure the car is in tip top condition and have fun!

Hi

If your budget can stretch a little then you can have my father's absolutely mint, factory built Sport 2000 here:
www.pistonheads.com/ads/adverts.asp?s=107

(Sorry for the plug but I'm on a finder's fee ;-)

Alternatively try :
www.hallmark-cars.com/
www.terrynightingale.co.uk/

Hope this helps

Juansolo,

To start with I'm going to join my local club and do their events for a while, when I get a bit more confident and more 'in the know' so to speak then I will move onto bigger and better things!!

I will also be doing it for fun, I will have to ask at my local club about the harnesses I have in there already, I will be buying a roll bar from westfield, and I hope to god it is MUCH taller than the one I have on there at the moment, I am 6ft 3" and my head sticks quite a way up!

I also need a steering wheel spacer and a smaller steering wheel (flat bottomed) so my leg can fit under properly!

Apart from that, I'm going to keep it as it is, I am not running 'sticky' rubber at the mo, was contemplating it though! When i get some pictures I'll work out how to put them up ere!

Cheers for the advice

Get yourself on a few trackdays and get some tuition also. Airfield days are particulaly good for exploring the limits of yourself and the car before you get onto some of the very narrow hillclimbs which can be a bit hairy otherwise.

I will also be doing it for fun, I will have to ask at my local club about the harnesses I have in there already, I will be buying a roll bar from westfield, and I hope to god it is MUCH taller than the one I have on there at the moment, I am 6ft 3" and my head sticks quite a way up!

The Westfeld RAC bar was about 3" taller than the single hoop bar on my SE. Ok for me at 5'11" with a helmet on but it might be a bit short for you. It might be worth speaking to Wesfield and see if they can make you one that is a couple of inches taller still. As they have to make stuff to order for the older cars they may be up for this.

Almost forgot. If you get the Westfield bar, make sure you get it with the removable rear stays. It makes it a lot easier to fit.

I also need a steering wheel spacer and a smaller steering wheel (flat bottomed) so my leg can fit under properly!

Momo 27D, top wheel. Scary looking at that pic as my car now looks very different now that it's been stripped.

Apart from that, I'm going to keep it as it is, I am not running 'sticky' rubber at the mo, was contemplating it though! When i get some pictures I'll work out how to put them up ere!

If you do decide to go sticky, dry sump it. It's pretty reasonable to do it to an X-Flow at around £600 all in.

Hey, juansolo, someone's bent yer steering wheel .... I'd take that back and get a refund I would, mate

(p.s. latest on my "stud" problem, I'm borrowing 2 professional stud removers tonight (including a snap on jobbie) ... if that doesn't work, then it's an engine out job ! eek)

The only thing that took a bit of practice was the rapid application of opposite lock (only for 'large' slides). Because of the restrictions a large bloke in a small car makes, it involves letting go of the wheel and catching it by the flat bit as opposed to crossing your arms over (legs get in the way). T'was a tad entertaining in the begining but it actually makes it easier once you get used to it.

Normal shaped people can get the Momo 26 which is the round equivalent of that wheel.

Juan, that was the wheel i've been looking at, what seats have you got in there because if I got thinner seats it would drop me down a couple of inches, I've looked at bucket seats but they are too wide!

Cheers for the advice

Caterham GRP Tillets. The best seat of it's type IMO and it's one of the few that will fit into the narrow Westie. You ain't sitting any further back or lower down than these The best bucket out there, but they ain't cheap. Otherwise I'd look at the Plays Kool Motorsport seats. Available in normal (I fit) and small (read - VERY small!). Very good chairs.
