Bringing the Caterham to life this afternoon from its winter sleep I noticed for the first time in the 4 years of ownership a big rubber covered button bolted to the bulkhead behind the battery. I pressed it with the ignition keys in various positions and with the engine running but it doesn't seem to do anything.. I half assumed it was a kill switch. Looked through the handbook again but no mention of it anywhere.. Any thoughts on its purpose??

Sounds like inertial fuel pump cut off. If it gets cut off somehow then pressing the button will reset it.

If it looks like this:

Then it is indeed an inertia fuel pump cutoff switch. A big ball bearing sitting on a weak spring, held down onto two contacts by a magnet. If it gets a whack (in a shunt for example) the impact breaks the magnetic grip, the spring pushes the ball off the contacts, fuel pump stops.

Press the top through the rubber cap and the ball sits back onto the contacts, held down by the magnet.
