Hi, looking at buying a Cobra rep in near future and have come across the ( probably done to death ! ) issues with V5’s etc.
In a nutshell should the V5 say ‘Dax ‘ ( or cobra etc ) AND the MOT certs AND the road tax status ?
Is it basically a no no if any are still in name of donor vehicle ?
Presuming all 3 are in same name so to speak and pre 78 does that really mean MOT and road tax free ?
Sorry if all is obvious just don’t want to buy a can of worms !
Cheers all .

If it is a replica it should not have the word Cobra on any official docs. because it is not a Cobra; that designation was licensed by Shelby and AC Cars back in the day.
However I am not a legal expert and I am sure someone will come along and give you another opinion.

Thanks, I only said ‘Cobra’ in a generic sense , I should have been specific and said the kit name ( Dax/ GD/ Pilgrim etc)
My question still stands 👍

To turn that around...the V5 (which is the controlling document) should not have the donor name.
Quite what it does say is very variable. If it has the kit manufacturers name and model you are good to go. It may say something a little more general like 'Ford special' or 'Ford 2 seat sports' which again is OK.
A kitcar is unlikely to get MOT/tax exemption but I would not be surprised if a few have gone past a DVLA desk that did not fully understand the rules.

Interesting Steve and makes sense re V5. Still can’t help thinking though that if V5 stars Dax Tojeiro. ( for example ) and first regestered/ date built 1976 ( for example ) then why would that not exempt it from mot: tax under the 40 year rule ?
Obviously it would be unlikely that the car was built that long ago but if the paperwork says that then ?......

Ill prepare myself for a flaming but I have a Dax Tojeiro and this is how I understand it:

As long as the v5c shows Dax Tojeiro and a date of first registration of 1976 then yes, tax & mot exempt in the eyes of the DVLA.

The 40-year rule does not apply if the vehicle has been substantially changed in the past 30 years.

But a correctly registered kit car hasn't been substantially changed. It's been reregistered. Now, technically the date of first registration shouldve been changed to the date of the changes when notified to DVLA. But this didn't happen back in the day (Pre IVA/SVA). Mine shows as a 1977. Even though the car was built and registered in 1992

If it was just a jaguar with the roof cut off 29 years ago then it wouldn't be mot exempt.

So I reckon mine is MOT exempt though I get it MOT'ed anyway for peace of mind.

Cheers

The correct info on V5 should show the kit manufacturers vehicle designation for instance Dax Tojero, Robin Hood 2b, Fisher Fury. Ford 2 seater or Sports is definitely wrong unless registered before SVA tests were required (now IVA).
Registration date is the date of registration of the newly IVA tested vehicle not the registration date of the original donor.
On the V5 there will be the emission testing requirements based on the age of the engine used, this will have been tested as the first test at IVA.

Just read over on cobraforum a chap took his Cobra ( correctly registered as make etc and with a 1977 date of reg) the tester tested using the regs for a 77 car.
