GTR McLaren

I’ve just been out to the shops here in Bristol. I saw a guy not far from where I live reversing what at first glance appeared to be a kit car GTR look alike variant.

Only as I waited for him to sort out his manoeuvres I saw McLaren was written down the side. I took a note of the plate just to be nosy and it came up as a UVA M6 GTR. Further investigation found the car recently sold with the same plate at least on historics.co.uk. Seems to be a rare beast. Now the one on the historcs website claimed it was first registered in 1998 yet the MOT page I found says it was first registered in 1971. Could it be that this bloke I saw has the original prototype in a lock up in Bristol!?

Kit cars often have old reg nos, either

1. To make them look more authentic
2. To get them registered using the identity of a donor car, and so avoiding testing and even acquiring "historical status".

Like the kit car on Hardcastle & McCormick TV show. The original McLaren was an M6 GT.

I came across a photo of a Manta Montage (an American kit car on which the UVA was based) on an American "Vintage" Race Cars website.

It was apparently taking part in a recent re-run of the Targa Florio, painted orange (of course) with McLaren Cars painted all over it. The owner claimed it was a genuine McLaren, though it obviously was not, and that it had been raced by Clay Regazzoni in 1972!

Here it is. Though after I pointed it out, he's now calling it a Manta-McLaren M8 !

The kit was sold by a company called UVA in Newbury I'd say in the late 1980's .The UVA montage was VW based, but as the VW engine was so gutless, the new GTR was a mix of space frame chassis and VW suspension that would take a Rover V8. A friend of mine still has the unbuilt kit in his garage, but was so appalled at the suspension geometry it was never completed. Far as I can see now it's not worth much as it would never pass SVA to make it road legal.
