Looking to by an already built Locost, the cars I have been looking at have never been registered for use on the road, so........

1) SVA any one any suggestions on the best way to get through it, i.e. I don’t want to get the thing tested without having first done some sort of check myself - to try and reduce the number of things that it could fail on. Are there any guides, manuals that offer this sort of thing?
2) Insurance – where is the best place to get insurance from? The main stream insurance companies I have spoken with don’t have a clue. I want to use the car on the road and for track days so will need insurance for both.
3) umm there was a third thing but I can’t remember what it was – DUH !! if this post gets edited later today it’ll be because I’ve remembered

Re Insurance - Hill House Hammond are very good for kit cars - 01733 310 899.

I would be VERY sceptical about buying a Locost without an SVA certificate - You could head straight into a car that needs completely rebuilding. They take into account so much on a car it just would not be worth the hassle!!!!!!! I cannot emphasise that enough - as far as I am aware Locost are built from plans which means that all of them could be different, you could buy yourself an absolute nightmare car.

Sorry to be so blunt but I would be very wary.

Mark, thanks for your comments blunt or not allows good to hear opinions of people in the know. When buying the car if i'm able to get the seller to put the car through SVA you reckon that this might be worth a shout?

D_Drinks - If the car has an SVA pass then go for it, you can always register the car yourself then, but the SVA is the important thing - To give you an idea, my car went through the SVA 4 times and it cost me well in excess of £1000.

Good luck though. - You'll love it when you get it.

I agree with these guys regarding the SVA. I'ts amazing how many little things need to be just right. If someone has put it together with no intention of registering for the road it may well be 'impossible'. Keep looking, something will come up that has been registered and has SVA/VIN etc.

The sva test is pretty gruelling even when you are familier with the car i.e having built it. I would get the builder to take it through even if you have to cover the test fee.

My locost (ish) passed second attempt having failed on some minor points, so it can be done. The finished result is worth the effort. A well built and setup locost is a good alternative to a westy, even on the track. If you are concerned about his one ther are plenty of good one out there.

Good luck.
