Big brakes for a kit car ??

Hello all,

i'm looking into upgrading the brakes on my Dax Rush for sensible money. Godspeed have some quite reasonably priced four pot kits, but i'm wondering how they compare to similar spec kits that are a lot more money. Any ideas on these or other options?? What have you got on your cars??

I'd suggest you identify the pcd on your wheels and find something from a donar vehicle. The discs should be fairly easy to sort out and you will need to make brackets if you intend to use big calipers. That depends on your wheel internal diameter to a large extent.

They do kits for just about anything. Is it a Ford set up an your Dax?

Had a look at the hi-spec kits, looks like good quality but i've heard awful stories about the service and attitude of the owner (geoff??).

i am running a cortina setup at the moment (uprights, solid discs and calipers).

Yup.
If I were you I'd look at the stuff in the Rally Design catalogue.
You can buy all the mounting brackets, disc bells, rotors etc and get them machined to suit.
Better to have a local company do the work so you can keep an eye on the quality.

I bought the brakes on my car from Hi Specs and have had excellent service from them. I would say give them a call and take it from there. Bear in mind that this is an extremely busy time of the year for them. As for the brakes, I would definately recommend them.
Having said all that, I suppose it is quite easy for me as they are just round the corner. But hey! Give them a call and see what happens. The brakes are definately worth having.

appreciate the input, i have been pointed toward caprisport (www.zyworld.com/caprisport/) by a post on the racecar.co.uk forums. the kits they have are loads cheaper than hi-spec or godspeed (£350 as opposed to £600-800). only problem is that i may need the hubs machining to be able to fit the kit.

i just need to decide whether i will pay the extra for the custom made kit, or whether to go with the cheaper option and machine the hubs. any ideas??

Not sure those prices can be compared directly though, as the cheaper option uses std Mondeo callipers - 600 to 800 would get you a alloy 6-pot setup (probably over the top on a 600kg car!).
The Willwood alloy 4-pot kits for the Cortina hubs start at £253 trade+vat according to the catalogue (with mark up + VAT possibly £380) - this looks pretty good value to me with special callipers and no hub mods.

You need to be careful when going for this kind of upgrade.

I wanted to do a Dax and have a cossie I was going to use as a donor, my cossie has 1.5k of Tar-rox 6 pot 330disc conversion which sounds great (and is) but would be way to much for a car of half the weight.

Have you been to Dax and asked about their top spec kit, I think it uses sierra 4x4 calipers and cossie discs and don't remember it seeming expensive.

When my car is loaded up with big passengers (i.e. me and an 'in'significant other) it weighs nearly 950kg.

Your ultima weighs around that doesn't it, how do the monster AP brakes feel on that. i know you've got much more tyre on the road 245 vs 205 but are they over the top.

surely its better to have too much power and press the pedal softer, than have too little and standing on it!!!

I'm not trying to compare the cars by the way (i am Mr Envy personified)
