Have been catching up on this handbag throwing contest. It does seem that Which Kit?'s advertising practices have been a bit underhand.

Histrically, I think that Kit Car had the edge production wise, but Which Kit? has caught, and overtaken them now I reckon.

Shame it's degenerated into public bitching on their pages

In the past, I have always found 'Kit Car' to be better, especially in the amount of content (even if it is 75% adverts). The clasifieds, and I guess the circulation must be better too. Haven't bought either for a few years.

The fighting is a bit petty though. Do you know how it all started, as I have never been bothered to search for any details.

I have to agree.

I think the advertising issue is a bit of a moot point. If you were going to build a car, you'd do your research, such as doing the shows, a factory visit, speaking to owners etc, so a few misleading ads is only going to get a few numpties.

In terms of the articles, I like the fact there are kit builds in quite some detail (no pun intended). The tips and technical advice is also something which a kit builder is going to be interested in. THey may not agree with it but interesting none the less)

Speaking of adverts, Kit Car is guilty of repeating adverts in its mags so It's a bit pot and kettle.

It did amuse me to see John Watson advertises his wedding car hire in Kit Car.

If your going to have a toys out the pram session, doing it in a magazine is not a good idea, just makes them look numpties.

Not a question of repeating the ads, Which Kit? are accused of advertising products that THEY have a financial interest in. Some of which allegedly don't even exist!

It seems that they're accused of taking speuclative deposits on some kits with a view to developing them. Of course, if not enough deposits are taken (even if their intentions were honorable), the kit doesn't get made and those who've handed over cash are left empty handed.

Not good

How can they be accused of advertising a product that they have a vested interest in if the product does not exist?
Is this two separate issues?
Surely you don't shoot the messanger for bearing bad news?
If someone wishes to advertise and pays their bill why would any magazine editor question their integrity until some issue is raised?

My personal preference has been towards Which Kit of late. That is due to the layout and ease of reading. I find Kit Car to be messy and over-run with ads, plus the paper quality is poor. However saying that I only buy either if they have something that interests me and would not subscribe as there is not enough technical detail to justify it.

All just IMHO of coarse!

Some issue has been raised, namely that a certain kit car magazine editor/publisher with fingers in several new kit car pies is apparently using his magazine to give glowing 'independent' reviews to 'his' kit cars while trying to keep the fact that they are 'his' kit cars very quiet.

Objective reporting or underhand self advertising? Answers on a postcard to Peter Filby, Which Kit? magazine...

I couldn't agree more. I'd have thought it was bad enough that PF has effectively fcuked-over his readers by doing what he has.

Apparently not though. It seems that even after various high-court shenanigans, the publishers of KC still find it necessary to piss away over four pages of the August issue on a load of childish 'We're right, he's wrong' sort of shite.

Whatever happened to 'humble in victory, gracious in defeat' eh...?

Can't see m'self buying either comic again in the near future.

I see PF is keeping schtum - still, I guess he would.

Oh, and Which Kit? are still advertising the Razor in the back of the mag despite the issues with it that are plainly advertised in Kit Car.

Still, me and my car did get a mention and a piccie in this month's Which Kit?

Was just looking at that this morning! Guessed it was you...

I wasn't really aware of this shenanigans, I've been reading Which Kit since Nov last year, just as a backgrounder since I would like to go for a 7esque BEC sometime soon. Oh well, as they say, don't believe everything you read.

My personal preference at the moment is WK?
I haven't bought KC for a good few months, but then I only buy the mag if it has something interesting in.

Without knowing all the ins and outs of this situation, I don't intend to comment on it, but I will say this.
Throughout the years the kit car industry has struggled to get the recognition and respect that it deserves.
The mainstream press haven't done much to help this matter, the term 'Kit Car' is still classed as an insult (you compare the shut lines on an Ultima or GD to a Merc or BMW...).
Having both current Kit Car publications scratching each others eyes out rather than working together to promote the industry seems like a waste of resources.
It's a real shame that such a diverse and talented industry has such poor representation.

Ted, I'm sure that many if not all of the Kit manufacturers around would love to have their cars reviewed on PistonHeads!

If you check the address for Razer and AF Sports they both happen to be the same as Which Kit's address

There was also a Cobra replica that Kit Car drew attention to for the same reason. Kit Car also pointed out that Which Kit normally go out of their way to avoid mentioning Pilgrim (I'd noticed that WK? didn't feature the Sumo in their Cobra guide).

Personally I had been buying both and do agree with some of the things that KitCar have said, but I prefer WhichKit and have decided just to buy it from now on. Decision helped by TigerK buying KitCar so we can just swap them over after reading!!

Since I have just bought a Westie,I have recently been buying the 2 mags.I have always thought that Mr Filbys' attitude to be a bit blunt.I di9d say to the wife that I would only be getting Kit Car from now on as the content in Which Kit a bit bland. There is good bits, but not enough to justify its cost. The last month I bought, there is a guy whos paid money to sell a part built Lambo,to which Mr Filby says basically 'AVOID IT' bit nasty really and he always grumps about stuff all the time. The Ultima build is very good and Nigel Dean does go to a good depth at times with little things which can make the difference to the finishing of a car.New editor for WK? maybe fresh blood might grab things by the horns and shake some more interest into it and the car building industry.

i think which kit is a better read, due to the build up projects and i dont just mean d deans, but like the mk engineering one because that is within reach of more people. also i enjoy the articals on diferent engines and how to get the best out of them.

"but then I only buy the mag if it has something interesting in."

I don't even bother. Read what's interesting (if anything gets past the usual bitching) and put them back on the shelf. The standards of both mag's leave a LOT to be desired.

i stopped buyng either recently too. its always the same old stuff, "wow, look at all the big v8's we have in the mag" and "this week well be stripping a v8", "and this week well be rebuilding a v8", "and this week well be modifying a v8" and "ooh, weve drove a westfield this week, er, again". and even though i didnt know about the previously mentioned shinanigans, you can tell by some of the over enthusiastic reviews that their opinions have have a hidden agenda. same everywhere you go i suppose tho, top gear has that some times, and you can tell when he does it, jeremy will rip a car to pieces and then say, "but its an excellent car though!" not all the time, but some times.

Mmm!

Just checked that out, interesting!
Can anyone point me to their reviews of said cars (Razor and AF)?

I take it Kit Car will not be doing any reviews of the two cars!

Justin S,
Must agree, I thought the comments about the for sale items was a bit nasty. Fair enough they have an opinion, but if they thought it was utter sh1te they should not have taken the guys money and put the ad in the mag.
If I was the advertiser I would demand my money back pronto!

I've not seen the reviews, but noticed the adverts quote Which Kit's complimentary comments!
I'm sure Kit Car would be happy to review both cars, if demonstrators exist.
Actually I think I did see the Razor on a stand at a show this year, but I'm not positive.

We won't be featuring either because we won't be allowed access. Anyway there's no Razer - Read my posting on the other Which Kit Vs Kit Car thingamy. The AF Sports isn't road leagal - they can't get it through SVA. Phone them and ask to test drive both. If you as a purchaser can't, what chance has Kit Car?

You may have seen the blue Eldon. Nobody that I've met has seen a Razer.

Any aspiring manufactureres out there? A bit of advice. Avoid the expense of design and prototype work. Instead go buy an old kit that nobody recognises and put your badge on it. Collect a few deposits and when you can afford it go and make the car you intended to make in the first place. BTW it'll have to look approximately the same otherwise people will think you're taking the P155.

Now, assuming you did follow my advice. What do you think Which Kit? would say on the matter?
