Martin, be good to see any updates, your design is similar to something I've been pondering but with a litre bike engine mounted behind the driver instead of your electric motor...

I'd even been considering the mono front shock - formula BMW used them with some very trick rotary dampers to control roll...

Unfortunately, I haven't the first idea about suspension design. The rest I can pretty much cope with, but designing the front end is way beyond me. Are there people/firms that design work can be outsourced to for reasonable cost?

Drifting off-topic, but the Koenigsegg 'triplex' set-up is really just a variation on quite an old concept of using a 'floating' transverse monoshock set-up. The first car I'm aware of that ran this arrangement (though there may have been others) was Len Terry's Terrier Mk. 6 from 1962:



In the Terrier installation, it was intended to completely separate bump and roll spring resistance, though in the Koenigsegg, as you say, it merely provides additional resistance to squat.

The really clever (though originally unintentional) side-effect, though, is that it cancels out the unwanted side-effect of the ARB: in a single wheel bump, a conventional ARB tries to lift the opposite wheel off the ground, thus degrading grip. With the transverse monoshock arrangement, the monoshock is trying to force the opposite wheel down at the same time as the ARB is trying to lift it so (depending on their relative stiffnesses) they cancel each other out to some degree.

Back on topic... I have to say that I'm not at all convinced that manually controlled tilt is a good idea on any trike faster than a HPV. I agree that computer servo/hyraulically controlled tilting is beyond the scope of a budget, amateur-built trike, but I'd be looking to find a geometric means of tilting the vehicle automatically and in proportion to the cornering force, probably using dual roll centres.

Why do you say that? There are a large number of cheap and easy to use boards that can do the control more than well enough to get a project going. You would then need to add the actuator.

The board is the least of your worries (if you have the electronics and programming experience to wire it up and program it).
  • You then have to understand enough about vehicle dynamics to be able to write the software.
  • You also have to add the sensors, the actuator, the pump to power the actuator, control valves and an accumulator to store the pressure from the pump.
But, most important, as far as I am concerned: electronics, actuators and pumps can all fail. If such a failure happens when you're negotiating a bend at 70mph, the chances are that you're dead. You have to make sure that everything (hardware and software) is ultra-reliable and even then I don't think it would be sensible unless you build in the sort of redundant systems you'd expect to find in an aircraft.

I'm not saying it's not possible, but it wouldn't be a budget project and to do it right would take a level of knowledge and engineering resource that I think would be beyond most amateurs or kit car manufacturers.

How is that possible for the stiffness in vertical motion at each side not to result in associated roll stiffness?

If you look at the photo, you'll see that if you disconnect the anti-roll bar, there's nothing to 'prop up' the sprung mass - the transverse coilover is just connected from suspension rocker to suspension rocker, not to the sprung mass, which would simply 'fall over' (in practice, everything would collapse over until something - a wishbone or driveshaft - reached the limit of its articulation) without the ARB to stop it from rotating.

Similarly, if you took away the coilover, the ARB on its own would simply rotate freely in its bearings and the sprung mass would collapse onto the ground.

And on top of all that you have to convince the IVA inspector it is safe.

that looks great from the front 3/4. it has odd proportions in other angles though..

So here's a question for the knowledgeable types! Does the BMW K series engine have a dry clutch and separate gearbox? I'm thinking BMW engine, Audi gearbox and front wheel drive.....thoughts anyone?

The Campagna T-Rex has a BMW K1600 6 cylinder engine now. Less power than the Ninja engine, more torque.

Not a kit car and definatley not a track day screamer but interesting that even the americans now seem to be looking at fuel economy

There was a post on one of the other forums Im on and they were worrying about fuel going over $5 a gallon, that must be nice iirc when I worked it out we are currently running at circa $10 a gallon.
