Overdrive boxes - I think there were two types one with the selector rods on the outside (definitely fitted to some Scimitars) and one not. TVR I believe did not use the rods on the outside version. Beware - The overdrive unit is not that strong, if you intend to have a trick motor in your car I personally wouldn't use the o/d box. You will also need to shorten the propshaft and relocate the handbrake.

Ford 2.8 box. Some people have fitted these but it has a weak first gear, can easily be broken by the torque of a trick Essex engine. Also the bellhousing is not a direct fit, although it can be redrilled to fit.

Another option is to use a Cosworth T5 box, again you'll need a new bell-housing and the gear change isn't that fast, but its a strong box.

Finally if you are ever going to sprint/hillclimb the car in a roadgoing (or modified roadgoing) class to meet the regulations you will need to retain the original four speeder.

In the 12 years I had my Taimar, I considered 5-speeders several times, but ended up retaining the 4 speeder, as its hassle to change, and the cars don't do a great mileage, so theres no real fuel saving benefit. Many people have changed to 5 speeders and prefer the lower cruising rpm. Its your choice at the end of the day, but go into it with your eyes open, as you don't want to put something in now that you will regret later! - Getting gearboxes out on an M in situ is a real pain (literally)!

............................When it is as easy as this to type I should stay quiet...........the 2.8 box needs modifying (2.9 front bearing and input shaft shortening, the ORIGINAL bellhousing is the one that needs drilling and welding (cast iron welding, that is), the propshaft is the same, the gearbox crossmember needs changing for a new one, the gear lever needs modifying and a quick shift conversion so that you don't, have to chop a great big hole in the trim, the speedo cable needs changing and the speedo needs re-calibrating.
by the way.......it is the best thing you will do to a 138 BHP 3000M (read Davids comments below) Adrian
